I just found out froma friend of a friend who is the personal assistant to Beyonce's assistant/best friend/co-songwriter Angela Beyince who says that Beyonce is not in talks to play Effie as earlier reported, but she is being greatly courted to play Deena. She also said that she doesnt want to sing "And I Am Telling you..." she extensively knows the show and knows that's Effie's song. and this rumor mill also spilled the others in talks for deena; a certain r+b songtress prematurely kicked off of the 1st season of american idol...
i'll post more as i find out.

If thats true, then thank goodness Beyonce knows the show and doesn't want it rewritten so she can sing the big song. That shows a little bit of humility.

Tamyra Gray sang And I'm Telling You for her first audition in the Top 32 of American Idol...it was great.

Well I HEARD from a friend of an uncle of a sister's babydaddy that I would get my contract for the role of Deena...that's right, the first teenage whiteboy to play the part ever...but it's true.

Personally, I think her voice is excellent. Very strong. I actually think it's too smooth for Effie though. Not raw enough. Acting-wise, no comment. I'm sure she can make it work since she's done the role a couple of times before.

hopefully the rumor of tamyra gray being in "dream girls" is true . she is a very talented singer as well as actress and would do very well in a musical like that.

Actually, Tamyra does have the energy and spunk for Lorell. She can do all that rough high singing (On AI she did "ANd I'm Telling You" and "Fool In Love")...Her solo career doesn't show much of that spunk. That "Raindrops Will Fall" is more of a Mariah/Whitney clone song... Maybe they are considering her for a backup to Deena...And, TonyaF, I'm likely to believe this gossip because the movie wouldnt be legit if they didnt try and get the most likely candidate for Deena, which is Beyonce. I'm sure she knows a lot about the show considering the history with Destiny's Child, comparisions to to Diana Ross, and most importantly her own love of good music.



Here's the question though, Do you think she could get nominated or possibly win an Oscar for this role? We all know Effie is meatier role, but anything is possible...Or do you think they could/would cut her role down to make it more of a supporting part (They did this with CZJ in Chicago, but Deena has so much to do, I doubt that this would work). The reason I'm asking this is because I know her people have an agenda in advising her whether to take this film on the basis of what it will do for her career.

I know this is reading way into the future, but I've seen some Oscar message boards where people are predicting who will win more than a year in advance and a lot of times they are right.

"Deena" is a very hard role to cast. The actress/singer who takes this role is going to have to check her ego at the door and realize that although it is one of the leads and a "flashy" role the character has no real solos. They will also have to realize that "Effie" is very much the lead of the piece and the character that not only gets the most solos, but also gets to sing the show's most famous number.

parallels between "Deena" and Beyoncé are too strong. sure she looks the part but Beyoncé can really sing her @ss off. "Deena" has to have a pleasant "pop" voice, not a voice that can blow the roof off a church and Beyoncé's voice can.

i wouldn't be surprised if they cast her as "Effie". the character of "Effie" doesn't necessarily have to be overweight.
i saw sharon brown do "Effie" and she was anything but fat. but then if they cast Beyoncé as "Effie" how would they ever get away with her saying this line: "Deena's beautiful, she's always been beautiful, but i've got the voice Curtis, i've got the voice" without movie audiences saying to themeselves: "hey, you're not that bad yourself!"

Even though Beyonce can sing down, I don't think that would limit her from playing Deena. Most the stuff Beyonce puts out as single displays that she has a pleasant "pop" voice. I dont think she's ever released song as singles that really show her ability to sing "Dangerously In Love." was just something she performed at award shows/concerts (It should've been released,IMO)

As for handling Beyonce's vocal abilities, couldn't it just be played up more that Deena started out rough but got much better. I don't think the score would require her to do much singing that would reveal how well she can sing. I know some people hate Audra's Deena, but I actually liked that she could sing (Now her vibrato and phrasing are another story)

Let the church say AMEN. If Beyonce does end up in this movie, I don't know why the Academy would give her an Oscar for playing herself. How much of a stretch would this role really be for her? So far, she has shown no depth in her acting and she doesn't have the voice for "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Having her play Effie would be the dumbest movie decision in years. If her Effie is supposed to be ugly, I guess they better cast Christina Milian as Deena (because she is way more attractive than Beyonce, in my opinion).

LOL...i'm with u on that one! it most def wouldn't go over. it would just be too weird.

i'm not knocking Beyoncé, i'm actually a fan, but i think the whole scenario strikes a little too close to her own "Destiny's Child" situation from a couple of years ago with two original members walking out (or being fired), the accusations of her being "a bitch" and the cause of all the dissention within the group. her father and her "camp" may just tell her not to even consider doing it because of it.

then again, sometimes bad publicity can work in one's favor and this just may be the role to give Beyoncé some screen cred. either way we will all have to sit back and see how this all plays out and who eventually is cast in this movie.

in the meantime it is fun playing "the guessing game"...

You all know that Beyonce would not play effie common sense so this post was not even needed.
