Thanks for the heads-up. I always Tivo the HD broadcast and watch it on the weekends. Gives me something to look forward to. Now there's an added little plus this week.

Thanks again!

According to Tom O'Neill of the LA times, the studio has officially decided to push Hudson in Supporting. The only problem now is convincing the Hollywood Foreign Press (aka the Golden Globes) to do the same. Here are a few exerpts from his piece:

"...The result is so good that DreamWorks/Paramount now faces a strange problem: Should they bump Hudson up to the lead actress race or keep her in supporting? Frankly, this movie belongs to her. She should be in lead, but let's be realistic. If she goes up against Helen Mirren at the Oscars, she'll get clobbered. However, if only she'll just stay put in supporting, we can declare that race won, wrapped up and ready for the history books. No other divas need apply.

DreamWorks/Paramount has officially decided to keep Hudson in supporting, as it originally reported here at GoldDerby, but soon the Hollywood Foreign Press Association could mess up everything. What if they push her into lead? It could really happen. Members can be very bull-headed about things like that. That race on the comedy/musical side is already pretty tight with Annette Bening ("Running with Scissors"), Mery Streep ("The Devil Wears Prada"), Renee Zellweger ("Miss Potter"), Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Cameron Diaz ("The Holiday") and Dakota Fanning ("Charlotte's Web"). Who's going to get bumped out? Beyonce maybe? To be brutally honest, she's one of the weakest candidates. If the Globes fail to nominate her, the ticked-off diva might not show up at the ceremony, even if she's asked to sing "Listen" as a best-song nominee. That could be catastrophic to the celeb-obsessed Globes.

Now, if only the Globes would just play ball with everybody and pretend that Hudson's role is really just supporting, then everything can go according to plan, thank you very much. Hudson can win supporting actress and the Globe voters can feel like they once again ordained a future Oscar champ. This way Beyonce will likely be nominated for best lead actress (voters HAVE to put someone from the show in that lineup), so HFPA will be assured that Beyonce will show up.

But will everybody play ball? DreamWorks/Paramount execs already have their argument mapped out to present to HFPA, claiming that just Beyonce is lead, not Hudson. They've counted up the minutes of each diva's face time. Technically, Beyonce has the most. OK. Maybe so. But in many of those scenes she's in the background while Hudson wows the audience..."

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

From someone who had never heard any of the music besides "And I Am Telling You," and didn't know which songs were the new ones, the new songs flow seamlessly into the original score. In fact, "Listen" and "Patience" were probably the two songs I enjoyed the most next to "And I Am Telling You." The gospel choir really made "Patience" a cool song, and it seemed like the score was able to touch on all areas of music that have been created by or greatly influenced by African Americans (including Gospel now!)

I am just too excited for this movie.

Oscarwatch.com has added Beyonce to the Best Supporting Actress category with Hudson (who is indeed the frontrunner).

They have moved Condon ahead of Scorsese, which shows strong buzz has poured out for Dreamgirls. I think Scorsese and Condon are going to be in a tough race.

Here is how Best Original Song currently looks aka Dreamgirls' likely competition (I'm sure they will be adding at LEAST "Listen" soon.):

Melissa Etheridge
"I Need to Wake Up", An Inconvenient Truth
Sheryl Crow
"Try Not to Remember", Home of the Brave
Prince
"The Song of the Heart", Happy Feet
Tim McGraw
"My Little Girl", Flicka
The Dixie Chicks
"The Neighbor", Shut Up and Sing

Not one but TWO documentaries could have a Best Song nom!

I'm concerned that Martin Scorsese will be awarded the Oscar simply because he is Scorsese, hasn't won before, and "The Departed" is his biggest financial success. Now, I won't mind it if he wins because his direction was the best one for the year. Granted, "The Departed" was more rivetting than "Dreamgirls", but that movie was a thriller afterall. However, in many of the buzz-inducing movies I have seen so far, "Dreamgirls" is the one movie where the director's passion for the material was palpable.

I remember hearing how it was Scorsese's year in 2003. I read some article in which Harvey Weinsten told Rob Marshall that he should steel himself for the fact that he wasn't going to win for Chicago, as it was Scorsese's year. The award went to Roman Polanski. Maybe Marshall and Scorsese split the vote that year?

"The stage version is easily one of the most cinematic stage productions I've ever seen..."

So if a musical is not cinematic it won't translate well?

Won't that Sheryl Crow song from "Cars" have a shot at being nominated? It was a good song, and I believe it was written for the movie. I'd like to see both "Listen" AND "Patience" sqeeze in.

Well, it was the sane way a few years ago with CHICAGO.

Will Zeta-Jones be considered Leading or Supporting?

The Oscars and Golden Globes didn't agree.

But I feel history will repeat itself, except mayb Hudson will win in the Lead Actress Golden Globe category, but then be pushed into the Supposrting for the Oscars.

And with that, I would be 100% happy. Because Helen Mirren will be winning the Oscar. Hands down.

"In other words Beyonce was more on a talent scale with Diana Ross while Ralph outranked both Beyonce and Ross in talent and presence."

I love SLR's Deena but I have to disagree with that. Acting wise- yes, Presence, personal taste I guess both have amazing presence IMO, but in terms of performing and vocal abillity i'd find it hard to believe that anyone would say Sheryl is stronger Beyonce in those areas, especially vocally, at least from a technical standpoint. Beyonce had to tone down her vocal chops 100% to play Deena and even then her Deena is still way stronger vocally than Ralph's. There's no way Ralph or Ross could pull off "Listen" without taking the difficulty of the song down a few notches. Beyonce's no Jennifer Holday, but her voice is very powerful and without restraint it would be way too big for Deena.
