Hi All,

I'm looking to join a theater dance class for beginners, something for someone just starting out - or for singers who need to be able to "move".

Have any of you heard good things about Jeff Shade's class at Steps - or Jim Cooney's class at Broadway Dance Center? Or do you have any other good recommendations?

Thanks!

IMO, Broadway Dance Center always seemed more welcoming to beginners than Steps. At Steps, it seemed like beginner classes were filled with advanced students using it as a warmup session.

I have taken both of those classes. Both teachers are very good with beginners, but I would probably recommend Jim's class at BDC. The only thing I would say to you is that if you're going to go to his class, go on a Monday because he starts the combination he's teaching then and builds on it all week.

Whatever you decide, enjoy!

The one good thing about selecting an instructor at STEPS or Broadway Dance Center, is that you can go and view the class before taking it. Don't make the mistake of just going to watch the end of the class which normally has the dance combination being performed. Check out the class from the warm-up right on through to see how the instructor interacts with everyone, and if you like the teaching style and class format. You may want to time it so you can view several classes during that time frame, and you can move from studio to studio with ease. Since the schedules are posted online daily, you can figure out a game plan. Good luck !

I love Jim's BDC class, but it is often very crowded. It is helpful if you have some previous dance experience. I haven't taken the Basic Theater dance at Steps, but it might be easier.

BDC is really crowded. Make sure to check the boards at all the rehearsal studios (Ripley Greer, etc.) as they sometimes offer good beginner classes not affiliated with a bigger dance studio. (And are cheaper!)
