Saw this show at a small theatre in Florida last year and it really was an unforgettable experience. It opens tonight at The Cherry Lane Theatre on Commerce Street- do yourself a favor and get a ticket. You will LOVE it.
I disagree about its quality. I enjoyed the first act reasonably well, but once <spoiler> happens, I thought it descended into a melodramatic Lifetime movie onstage. Moral reckoning is so 17th century.
There was a production here in Buffalo last year - I absolutely loved it. Glad to see it's getting a New York production.
I know parties involved so I won't comment directly except to say one thing people have liked about the script (elsewhere, including SF) is that it's decidedly an issue play, post Stonewall/post Obergefell v. Hodges, that's not about coming out or evangelical de-programming. People have responded to its topicality. Curious to see which critic from the Times is assigned.
I'm surprised no one is talking about this. Saw it on Friday and it is a real gem over at the Cherry Lane.
It is best to know as little as possible about it going in, so I won't say more except great script, acting, direction, set and lighting. A gay couple of 7 years. One wants to get married. The other doesn't.
This is not going where you think it's going, so buckle up.
Side note - they seem to have yanked all the discount codes for this after the great reviews came out, but I'd still recommend trying to snag a seat if possible. New plays with this kind of emotional punch don't come around too often.
Manipulative drivel.
Don't think I could have disliked it more. It can't be a true issue play as there is only one side to the argument. Every plot point and character exists to make that point, which is clear from the first 5 minutes. And shocking, nearly everyone is a perfect person - or eventually redeemed - except the one woman. Trite.
