I really enjoyed Daphne's performance too. She sang the song a little reserved but with a great amount of passion. She was a pleasure to watch.

Gumbo: I don't know what her reviews were like during Rent but I can tell you that her voice has changed a lot since. I think most of their (the rent obc) voices have. Chalk it up to what you will: age, maturity, more training or, in most of their cases, ten more years of smoking. Personally I think Daphne sounds better now than she has in a while, and that is coming from someone who doesn't think she sounded bad to begin with!

Ken: Daphne's absence has been talked about to death. You didn't know she would be out in early March? She has been saying for a while now that she thinks she will be gone starting the beginning of February for 7-12 weeks. That is not new news.

"I wrote a book: "How to Be Popular". Now I've put together a top ten list of how to help you: -Elphie, everyday... shower. I mean, who knows? Maybe some of that green is gonna come off! -Deodorant Elphie. No body likes a stinky witch! -I think we've covered the hair, we'll get to that. -Clean underclothes. That's all I'm gonna say. -Look at your posture. That's no way to be popular! -Bed made, room straightened. We've done that. -Colors blended. Oookay. -But the most important thing to have, to make yourself popular, is to keep your beautiful smile." ~Kristin Chenoweth in her last performance of the song "Popular"

Sorry - I had forgotten when my second set of tickets were for.... I checked, and viloa! I didn't know that when I purchased them (that she would be out then...)

I wasn't saying that you don't post on other threads as well. I haven't been monitoring your actions or anything - I just think that when you've been quite vocal about a particular topic already and you see another post about it don't you think to yourself: "No, I won't waste my time reiterating my opinion again, I'll go make a coffee instead."

I appreciate that you didn't enjoy Daphne Rubin-Vega's performance. I appreciate that you were disappointed by it. But come on, is it necessary to voice your negative opinion in such a way and so relentlessly? You have made quite a few harsh comments about her performance - is it not time to move on now?

I'm really not trying to get at you. I don't know you. I can tell you really love theatre - so do I. I just wanted to voice my opinion on the way that you have chosen to approach threads on this subject.

Daphne doesn't talk the entire song... the parts she talks are EASY parts.. why does she need to hold out notes for no reason?? this is her version of the song... every note should not be held long just for the sake of showing off the voice. when daphne goes for those high notes, she does not talk them..

I would not have enjoyed her performance WITHOUT her breathiness and raspiness... it adds so much to what she's going through.. she builds and builds through out the song.

Yeah, consumption will do that to a gal.

I have not heard Daphne's version but I did like Kelly Ground when she did it in the National Tour!

Both sides of this argument make sense to me... her breathiness and raspiness adds to the character's representation of her sickness, but also the breathiness isn't how "I Dreamed a Dream" is usually sung...

I spose i'll wait until Saturday night and decide for myself!

Hey, Ken.
You're not so far away, and you do go to a lot of shows.
Why not get an additional set of tickets so you can see the Daphne performance that people are talking about?

I hated the Fantine that I saw during the first week of previews (twice) -- and was absolutely among the people singing for Daphne to be replaced. The current Fantine ( and I've seen this one four times) is different from that. I call it a miracle, but I appreciate what she has done, and I'm happy for her.

I would love to see your post afterwards.

p.s. At least you'd get to see Celia again.

I'm glad some people have liked Daphne's performance. I've been a fan of hers for a long time, and it would be too bad if everyone hated her/she was cast badly. I can see how her unique voice would add a new dimension to Fantine, but with a voice as distinctive as hers it's probably a jolt to hear her in a familiar role. Maybe as she gets more comfortable in the role it will seem more natural.

I saw her the saturday after they opened. I was in the last row towards the side and i could see the lighting booth from where I am sitting. Apperently, in the booth they have a tv that is on mute for the people working there to watch during the show. They had on a college football game. Being that I love sports just as much as I love theatre, guess what I did during the ****ty I dreamed a dream? You guessed it I watched the Rutgers game. Now, I know its rude and everything and I am just saying that before I get bashed. But, I am telling you that it was that bad I had to turn my attentation towards something else. By the way, Tim Hower is doing Rent right now. Guess who he is married to? Ruthie Henshall, she is in the city doing nothing. If she were to do it she would kick the **** out of I Dreamed A Dream eight times a week. I would love it if they had her come in during DRV's time off and just kept her in there the rest of the run.

Ring up Cameron Mack and suggest that, i'm sure he'd love some advice from someone who watches football in the middle of a Broadway show.

I haven't seen Daphne, but I think she's a brilliant actress and performer. Her voice has never been particularly strong, and it is in no way conventionally "pretty." Still, I think I'd take it over Ruthie Henshall any day of the week.

Personally, I love an actor who sings, not a singer who acts, and I bet a lot of people heading to Les Miz feel the opposite.

Daphne wishes she had an ounce of Ruthie's vocal range and talent. Ruthie is a unique triple threat. She can sing legit soprano, and alto, not to mention she is an amazing dancer. Daphne wishes.

I would do anything for Ruthie back on Broadway. Though technically she was back on Broadway last nite.

I'm sure Daphne doesn't wish to have anyone's vocal range or talent, because Daphne is a unique, tony nominated, fearless, versatile, singer actor who is completely passionate about her art.

I hope you are right about her change for the better, but unfortunately, I really don't want to intentially see her again in the role... Too many other shows I'd rather see instead (while she's still in it).... I know my wife agrees... Tonight, it's "Evil Dead The Musical" for a second time - this time bringing the "kids" along!!!

I said that i watched the game during the show to prove a point. That she was so bad I couldn't listen to her. I actually cringed and looked at my watch during her song I did glace at the game but I didn't watch it fully.
