Has it been over a year since David did Madonna? I remember it so vividly that it seems like just days, weeks ago. Great entertainment blurs those time frames.
So since neither Esther or Robbie "Shilly McShill" Maitner, the Darling of Cape May seem to be online lately I decided to start this thread. I see there's a BWW News headline stating:
"David Gurland will present 3 special performances of his tribute to Madonna, a collaboration with musical director and arranger Michael Holland, at the Metropolitan room. The performances will take place on August 24th, August 25th and August 26th at 10:30 PM.
Gurland's critically acclaimed show, "Neurotica," premiered in May 2005 and covers twenty of Madonna's hit songs from the early 80's through the present, with many surprises along the way. "Since May of 2005, 'Neurotica; enjoyed sold out crowds and rave reviews with its unique mergence of rock music and the theatricality of a cabaret show," state press notes. In addition to the arrangements and musical direction, award winning songwriter/singer/instrumentalist Michael Holland will be playing guitar and piano. "Neurotica" also features Rob Maitner (back-up vocals), Jerry Smith (percussion), Jonathan Tomaselli (back-up vocals) and Matt Wigton (bass).
Gurland has performed in such New York venues as BB Kings, Downtime, The Bitter End, The Cutting Room, The Living Room, CB's Gallery, FEZ, The Encore, Don't Tell Mama, The Duplex, The Triad, as well The Gardenia in LA, Twiggs in San Diego and The Manor in NJ. He has also been featured in Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concert series for two seasons in a row. For his nightclub and cabaret performances, he has won the Manhattan Association of Cabaret's Hanson Award, as well as having been nominated an additional five times. Gurland has also won three Back Stage Bistro Awards, more than any other Male Vocalist.
Visit www.davidgurland.com or www.metropolitanroom.com for more information and tickets."
Anyone looking for a fun night out with quality entertainment doesn't need to look any further than a David Gurland's show.
Not a shill, just a lifelong fan. And hey, Mr. Gurland, when can I see you in another play? You're just too darn talented not to be in a spotlight.
Great minds, etoile...
Can't have too much David appreciation!
So it will be another great night with the snake pit.
LOL.
PS sometimes even nice people can have a bad day. This was one of them for me.

well no one ever accused you of having taste, corie.
Lennie is a star right now. And he is playing at the same place.
He really should be the next Edna Turnblad.
He was fantastic in Broadway By The Year.
Love, Lennie!
My name is Corine not Corie. Corie is used for friends and honey you are no friend.
how bout i just call ya sh*tbag? that work for ya?

Corine, I'm sorry, but that's a frigging world class thread jack, even for you. It's ridiculous.
One of the many things that is extremely frustrating about you is how you like to position yourself as so "in the know" and "cutting edge" about what's hot in New York and yet you often pontificate about things you've never seen, and express open hostility about things you've decided aren't going to be good.
Remember how "horrible" you thought Spelling Bee was because you saw some understudies perform one song at a benefit? No desire to see it, you announced. Not when you could go see some piece of crap you'd already seen more than once.
Then of course there was your unforgiveable snub of Rob Maitner's two shows (a year apart) at the Duplex. "Who's Rob Mainter?" you asked. ("How could the doyenne of NYC, with her finger on the veritable pulse of the performing arts in Manhattan be so clueless?" many others asked.) "I'll see him next time," you said, "I have EIGHT jobs and I work at the Drama Desks and I am just TOO TOO busy," you explained. Next time came, and you skipped it again.
And so now, another show you haven't seen, and rather than just shut your trap about it, you come in and mention some OTHER performer in a thread that wasn't about him. Why couldn't you be as silent as you were in your "interview" with that chef from the Trump Grill?
Oh, and let me just post what you wrote here, before you do your editing trick.
"So it will be another great night with the snake pit.
LOL.
I'd rather see Lennie Watt's."

By the way, most people's last names don't have apostrophes in them. A journalist needs to learn these things.
Right on, Namey. I was just about to ask Core, in response to her statement "I'd rather see Lennie Watt's." "You would rather see Lennie Watt's what?"

Welcome to Match Game '06!
Kooky Corie is so kooky ["How kooky is she?"], thank you for asking: Kooky Corie is so kooky, she'd love to see Lennie Watt's ______________!
I am sorry, Corinie, I didn't check the Forbidden Broadway schedule. You are excused from seeing one of the most talented Cabaret performers in New York since it looks like FB will be doing the Annie sketch that weekend. I know how you hate to miss that one. Have fun. Forbidden Broadway just gets funnier and funnier each of the 600 times you see it, doesn't it?
And not for nothing, David Gurland draws large, appreciative crowds. The BWW representation is but a drop in the bucket of his fan base. This show keeps coming back because it is so freakin' good!
Seriously, you really are missing out on a good thing, Corine. You really ought to give his show a try. Chances are, you'd love it.
Hey, Corie, on Lenny Watt's web site is says he is doing a Christmas show. Do you know if this is an old announcement from LAST year or an early announcement for THIS year? Either way, I am sure his act won't conflict with David's. Think outside your padded cell and go see someone new!
stop it! she knows what she likes and your evil psychobabble will not change that! so just stop!
The nastiness in this thread isn't going to help incite people to go see Mr. Gurland's show...
I've not seen David, but I've heard through friends that he is really remarkably funnny. I've go to get into the city to see Rob, JRB, Eddie & the Varlettes. How about a tour?
(papa,,, I have this strange inclination to "interview" you. Ya know that feeling when you know there's something in your tummy that just has to come up. But, that would mean you coming out of your tree and meeting me in NYC, fully dressed.)
Haven't posted in forever! Goodness gracious.
Just a clarification...the fabulously talented Lennie Watts was the first to book David Gurland's Neurotica show. He then invited David to bring the show back to the Metropolitan Room. They are friends and colleagues who support each other a great deal.
My advice? See both shows. They are extremely different, and both so wonderfully satisfying.
I'll never understand the desire to pit artist against artist, in any way shape or form. There's more than enough room for everyone in town.

That's our Corie, turning even a delightful embarassment of riches into Sophie's Choice.
David Gurland's NEUROTICA is indeed a wonderful show, his energy and inspired take on Madonna's impressive songbook is a sexy and savvy delight!
I'm trying hard to figure out why someone would of posted something so inane in this thread regarding this upcoming event, David Gurland is a respected and talented member of both the cabaret and theatrical community. In addition to his theater and concert work, he's a passionate supporter of BC/EFA and The Matthew Shepard Foundation among other organizations that are fighting the endless battle against AIDS and LGBT-related discrimination , donating his time and talent to several concerts throughout the country. He's also a dear friend, I can't wait to see him perform the show again!
Ok, Eddie. If you like him he must be good.
PS I was not putting down Gurland as I have never seen him.
You vultures need to chill.
Yeesh.

Corine.
With all DUE respect. And I know you'll just accuse me of hating you, but go ahead - but who's the vulture? The person that goes into a thread to threadjack it and make negative comments when there was nothing but an announcement for a show or the people that defend that performer?
Namo hit the nail on the head. You really should try and not be hypocritical. You get angry at people for bashing performers you like and defend them, yet you go in and randomly (you've never seen the talented David perform) jump into a thread and then wonder why people go after you? Do you not sincerely see why you opened yourself up for this?
Stop crying wolf (or in this case victim) and even the "vultures" you speak of would take you more seriously.
This is intended as advice and not bashing.
And you praise yourself for being the lover of broadway and not the "butcher"
I wonder how Mr. Gurland feels about that....
Oh ok, Corine2, guess it was just a classic case of cranio-rectal inversion. The humid weather brings that out sometimes, go see the show it's wonderful. David Gurland's dynamic tenor delights!

We are all a different fruit in the giant fruit bowl of life. Can't you fruits get along? I'm just sayin'...
As a huge Madonna fan (no, really??), this is a brilliant show. It's a tribute to David's talents and Madonna & her co-writers' that the songs are so freaking fab reworked and made his own. Go see it!

WOW What a post.....
Well first and foremost, I'd like to thank all of you who posted to wonderfully about me and Neurotica. You are all such a great group. So supportive. I am grateful for that and can't wait to see as many of you as possible in the audience for Neurotica's premiere at the Metropolitan Room.
As for Corine, I am sorry but I don't know you. 2 thoughts
1) I would love to see you in the audience at Neurotica, even though I don't know what you look like. Just so that you can back up any 'smake pit' comments that you make. Have you ever seen me perfrom ..ever??
2) As Robbie put it, Lennie is a friend of mine, and a great talent. I plan on seeing him this Monday night. As I love to support my talented friends whenever possible. Maybe I will see you there...maybe not
I gotta bump this to remind everyone to run and see David. RUN!
Only three more performances! If you miss this, in the immortal words of Judge Judy, "You, Sir, are an IDIOT!!! Now GO!"
Who's going? Show of hands...
