re: David Turner in 'In my Life'

Was he the silly little Mary that flew around the set squealing like a little girl?

No. I did not find him funny. In fact I found him offensive. You'd think that at a BROADWAY show, we can escape these caricature's of gay men that have been around for years. But for some reason, the writers felt the need to include this ridiculous character in an already ridiculous plot line.

Everytime I think we're making progress I see something like this that just makes me wonder.

Quite hilarious daning around with a skeleton. Not hilarious: the fey gay stereotype.

re: David Turner in 'In my Life'

I thought he was great. I couldn't be offended by the gay stereotype because I was too busy being offended at a myriad of other things.

I thought he was great because he did a hell of a job rising above the material.

re: David Turner in 'In my Life'

I think he's a real showman. I found him more like the emcee in Cabaret or the lead in Rocky Horror. Would you want to exorcise those roles from the theatrical canon, too? I didn't like the "do you believe in fairies?" line at the end and I was hoping that was just part of his crack about it still being previews, but that sure didn't stop me from enjoying his performance.

I liked him for playing it over the top and not taking himself seriously. He's got great comic timing and panache. His wicked intentions for the sake of "high art" give him the most drive in the piece.

re: David Turner in 'In my Life'

I'm convinced this role was written in a completely insensitive and careless manner (i.e., the painful fruit joke at the begining). But the actor has done a brilliant job of transcending this crazy musical and playing the role to the hilt. Recognizing the musical is what it is, and it will NEVER be fixed, no matter how much tinkering there might be, he just goes for it. He has nothing to lose.

Instead of viewing this as a ridiculously stereotypical portrayal (which I can understand why others do), I see it as a case of an actor doing anything he can to salvage this wreck and entertain the audience. While I laughed at all the unintentional stuff (pretty much the WHOLE show) with my hand over my mouth, I laughed out loud at Turner's over the top antics. He has found a gold mine in a large pile of musical manure.

re: David Turner in 'In My Life'

Oh, this man is wonderful.

I agree with whoever said he was able to rise above this material. I've got so much respect for this wonderfully talented person, I can't wait to see him in many more Broadway shows in the future. I was touched by his performance. No, he's not given the best material to work with. But it never once seemed to bother him. He just sort of radiated this pride and joy of performing on a Broadway stage. His love of performing shown through, at that is contagous. Excellent performer.
