When I went to school in Boston, we were told not to call the city "Beantown." But it seemed to be more of a minor irritant. Otherwise, NKOTB wouldn't have kept calling themselves the "Beantown Posse."

I just hate the way some of the people on this board treat others.
Urban Dictionary clearly has it wrong, because in their example, they protrayed the average American person to be nice and polite. That doesn't seem to happen too much on here!

Posted: 7/26/10 at 8:11pmI just did a quick search, and it looks like it was debated in usage in 1880. And was mentioned around 1918. But people didn't like the terminology then either. And yes, I'm one of them who prefers using the entire name, unless I'm in Frisco, TX. Of course, if someone actually knows a native San Franciscian you could ask them.
