If they were just walking through the airport, why and how would the security make the assumption that they were a couple and discriminate against them based on that? Especially since this happened in Newport News; the two men being a couple is probably the last thing they would assume.

Once flying from Nashville to LaGuardia, I was asked to take off my shoes. Being the smartass that I am, I turned to my friend and said with a wink, "Did I mention that I hid a bomb in my three inch heel?" The security officer gave me a deadly look and said, "You know I could arrest you for that?" I think she let me go becuase my eyes welled up at the thought of missing my flight...lol.

Perhaps they were just simply holding hands, as couples do.

Being from the south as well, I can't believe that the good-ol boys workin' at the airport saw nothing but some "city-fied, race-tradin' homosexyouals."

It truly make me sick.

I flew into and out of La Guardia for the 1st time this past May. The security people were not very nice. I even e-mailed TSA about it. Thank God they didn't stop me because I had foot poweder on. I found out that you shouldn't powder your feet as you may be pulled aside if they notice it when you take your shoes off.

Being from the south as well, unless they were holding hands or kissing or some obvious PDA like that, very few people would assume they were gay just because they were traveling together. If Denis O'Hare and his partner don't think it was motivated by homophobia, I'm going to believe them, not infer something based on this article.

They also said they think it wasn't racially motivated. Having seen Mr. O'Hare's partner, he very much resembles my 1st partner who regularly gets stopped no matter what airport he is in.

Since we're sharing airport stories...

I was stopped once in Miami and asked to step out of line. My carry-on bag was searched, and I was "wanded". I was also carrying a bottle of water, which was opened. Before allowing me to board the plane, the tSA worker asked me to "take a sip" of the water, I suppose to prove that there wasn't poison or anything in it.

I think a lot of it probably has to do with how the comment was made. I have a feeling these airport security guys get a LOT of flack daily from anyone stopped for inspection for any reason and I bet they have VERY short fuses and are looking for a bit of payback. It doesn't excuse their obvious overreaction to this situation, but I'm certainly not going to say anything within earshot of those guys that would give them a reason to make my life hell simply because they can and they will.

Remember the scene in Airplane (2?) where the guy is waving to his friend and shouts, "Hi Jack!" and suddenly is ambushed by policemen? That is now the reality and to make any joke, no matter how small, about terrorism in an airport in front of security, really is quite careless. We bitch when security is lax, we bitch when it is militant. When is the porridge just right?

Thank you, Mister Matt. That's exactly how I feel about the situation. The worker obviously overreacted, but that doesn't excuse the stupidity of the comment made. You simply cannot, no matter how jokingly or in what context, say these kinds of things in the airport.

yup. you can't say those things. i'm sure real terrorists would say those things, not regular people.

I read that as broke the seal for some reason and couldn't figure out why you were talking about getting drunk. I'm so hopeless.

And I can't believe it was on something boring like airport security!

So we now have to give up our freedom of speech in the airport because these people have short fuses? I'm sorry that is BEYOND ridiculous! We have the right, as Americans, to say whatever we want!

What would a real terrorist say? Most likely, they would try to act like regular people. And apparently regular people say those things. But what a terrorist might say is not the point.

The point is, referring to yourself as a terrorist, in jest or not, to any type of security, police, or military is a sure-fire way to end up being detained. That is how they are trained. Can you imagine if he had joked about being a terrorist when on the plane and was overhead by a skittish flight attendant? I imagine the situation would have been ten times worse. And even if said in the most light-hearted manner, you never know what the attitude of the person will be who hears it. I don't know, to me, it just seems common sense not to make a comment like that. It's like saying to a police officer in Texas, "Why did you stop me, officer? Was it the body in the trunk? Yuk, yuk yuk!" You'll be the girlfriend of a very large scary man referred to as the Pain Man faster than you can say "lubricant".

OK... I love Denis O'Hare and agree that the airport security needs to let this go... and I'm sure I'll get jumped on for this, but...

but.... why on earth would you EVER make a terrorist joke in an airport?

Well, I definitely feel sorry for Denis and his partner. However, I always feel that it's always in your best interest when security wants something to be as quiet and cooperative as possible. Many people with the subway searches in NY were grumbling, but I always just opened my bag right up -- even if they didn't ask me to. I had one cop look at me like he was going to ask to search my bag, I started unzipping my bag and he didn't even look and told me to go on.

How stupid does a New Yorker have to be to make any comment at all? Better to just keep your mouth shut in the first place.
That said, it does sound like an overreaction.

I agree that his partner should've just kept his mouth shut. And Denis should just chill with blaming everything on the president, I doubt this is GW's fault, well it obviously isn't, it's his parnters fault. Is Denis back in Charity now? I'm sort of hoping to see his understudy.
