Dennis Letts, who played the character of Beverly in AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY and was the father of playwright Tracy Letts, died of Cancer on Friday. How very sad for the entire cast, and especially Tracy and his family.
Eliot may have got it wrong. "Life is very long." Unfortunately, not for this fine actor.

The past 2 times I have seen this, he has been absent. This explains it.
Very tragic.

Posted: 2/24/08 at 3:49amoh my god! And this saddens me even more because the evening I saw it, I missed out on a lot of his time, in the first act, due to unruly audience members. We had to constantly shush people and I missed a lot of his dialogue. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Letts was suffering from cancer from the start of the Broadway run.
What a shame, and such a downer.

I'm glad he was able to feel the joy of appearing in a Broadway show before his passing. As he was a long time actor, I imagine this may have been the way he wanted to go out.
May he rest in peace.

Posted: 2/24/08 at 9:37amImagine what it must have felt like to have spent your last days performing in a Broadway play written by your son getting some of the best reviews in recent history. If that's not one freakin' awesome way to go - I don't know what is. He was a great talent. Rest in peace.

Posted: 2/24/08 at 10:35amI saw it in January for the second time and he didn't come out for the curtain call. After that he has been absent for most of the performances. He was an excellent actor. Rest in peace.

Very sad news. My condolences to his family, both blood and theatre.
The play was dedicated to him.

Did anyone else see how BWW botched up the story...

Shameful.

yeah I saw that too..
I was killing time until my show and walked by the A:OC theatre on Friday and noticed that his understudy was on and didn't think anything of it. Boy I feel dumb now.
Again RIP Mr. Letts. Truly heartbreaking.

Posted: 2/24/08 at 11:10pmTruly, truly saddening news. I wish I had had the opportunity to catch Mr. Letts in AUGUST. I shall have to wait until 'the big move' into the Music Box this coming spring. In reality, I'm certain that he felt 'ready enough' - making his Broadway debut in HIS SON's masterwork, which was praised so-much-so by critics and Osagians (at home and abroad) alike. May he rest in peace, and may continued condolences, successes and praise be passed on to the cast and crew at the Imperial, that other fine institution across the street, and the hereafter.

RIP Sir.
Your Legacy lives on, in your son's writing,
on this play and I hope many others.
So Patti missed his performance?
I hear she arrived a little late.
