I think she should get a nomination. I mean, who is the shoo-in for a Leading Actress nod this year? All the big award-worthy war-related movies bombed hard, so I'm sure they're not up for consideration anymore. I say give her a nod. She was suburb. She was the only one in the movie with a fully outlined character.
My friend does not like Daniel Day Lewis...thinks he over acts in everything he does...can not say for myself, have not seen the film he is in yet!
I hate awards anyway, such a lack of disgrace to me. I mean awards go for doing hard work, but the way the media tends you to believe is that the person who wins is better than the person who does not. GEEEZZZ....they all do fine work, everyone is a critic and leave it at that.
i agree that helena should be considered lead, but, keep in mind that this years lead actress race is quite strong and already women are fighting to make it into the top 5. as of now these women are considered to be the top contenders:
Julie Christie - Away from Her (the likely winner)
Marion Cotillard - La Vie en Rose
Keira Knightley - Atonement
Ellen Page - Juno
Angelina Jolie - A Mighty Heart
other possibilities:
Cate Blanchett - Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Amy Adams - Enchanted
Helena Bonham Carter - Sweeney Todd
Laura Linney - The Savages
Keri Russell - Waitress
it's going to be tough for helena to sneak in... i say go for a supporting nom...

RentBoy,As for your question as to who is as is a lock for leading actress, you have three ladies who are basically assured nominations. Julie Christie in Away From Her is racking up critic's prize after crictic's prize for her role as a woman with Alzheimer's. Then we have Marion Cotillard for La Vie En Rose for her bravura performance as Edith Piaf. Finally, Ellen Page for Juno as the young teen who becomes pregnant and in the process finds herself.
After that, it gets a little fuzzy. Most likely Cate Blanchett and Angelina Jolie will round out the category. Blanchett gives an incredible performance in the less then stellar Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Jolie plays the wife of terrorist prisoner David Pearl in A Mighty Heart. Both women have racked up nominations in the right places: Critic's Choice, Golden Globes, SAG. As for Jolie, it will be a validation nod to her abilities as a serious actress after her win for Girl, Interrupted. Blanchett has had a standout year with this performance plus her gender bending role as Jude in I'm Not There. Don't be surprised to see her nominated in both lead and supporting this year.
Don't count our Keira Knightley. If the Academy falls in love with Atonement, she could be pulled along for the ride. There's also Amy Adams for her sweet performance in Enchanted which may be too sugary for Academy members. As for Ms. Carter, her chances were hurt when SAG went with Jolie and Blanchett. But, this could snub could be due to the fact that ST came out late in the season. Voters probably didn't have a chance to see the film before casting their ballots. So don't count out the Sweeney and friends yet.
Concerning Johnny Depp: it might sound crazy, but y'know... he might not even be nominated. Not that it isn't very likely, but consider all the other great performances out there that have been getting attention: Viggo Mortensen for EASTERN PROMISES, George Clooney for MICHAEL CLAYTON (which was a big surprise to me), Emile Hirsch for INTO THE WILD (which has been getting more and more love).
Depp probably will be nominated, but - this year especially - you actually don't know yet.
P.S. And, as I've said before, Daniel Day-Lewis is pretty much God in Hollywood. Even if they didn't see his movie, the AMPAS people might feel too guilty NOT to give him a win. Especially after not giving it to him for GANGS OF NEW YORK (although Adrien Brody certainly did deserve that win).
P.P.S. Helena has no buzz, has no chance of being nominated. And that's a real shame.
Keira Knightly so does not deserve a nomination for ATONEMENT.
I don't think Blanchett really deserves a nomination for ELIZABETH either, but I think she'll get one. Its an easy choice if you haven't seen all the films. Ellen Page and Marion Coitillard look good and of course Julie Christie is probably the front runner to win.
If Jolie gets a nomination, it will be at least partly for her highly visible year (and her activism outside of her acting career).
Best Actress is usually one of those catagories that gets locked out way in advance through critics awards groups. I'd be surprised if Carter got in there, but she really does deserve it.
