Which musical do you think has the most depressing ending?
Aida.
How exactly does Aida end? I've heard some of the music but I don't know how the show ends.
*Spoilers* They both die in the end.
Katie2: Aida ends with the two main characters, lovers Aida and Radames, being buried alive for treason. They both die as a result, obviously. If you want more deatils, PM me.
I have only heard the cast recording, but I think THE BEAUTIFUL GAME has a rather depressing ending.

EDIT

*sniff***** * FURTHER SPOLIER***** Amneris actually shows mercy on Aida and Radames and sentences them to die by being entomed alive but together No one wins in the end of that show.

I'd say for me Merrily We Roll Along has a pretty damn depressing ending.
Parade
Bare
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Cabaret..
C'mon, you guys!
It ends in an abortion and NAZIS!!
How utterly depressing is that?
I haven't seen Cabaret but that does sound depressing. Phantom of the Opera has a depressing ending too. Also, Titanic. Now that ending made me cry like a baby.
munkustrap, you read my mind completely.
*PARADE spoilers ahead*
The ending to PARADE is very depressing, yet beautiful at the same time, in an odd sort of way. I love the drums in the finale. I saw a video of a local production, and after the singing in the finale, they added in church bells and all you could see was the outline of the large tree in the center, and Leo's body swaying from it, on the cyc. It was very eerie.
*BARE* spoilers ahead*
BARE was depressing also, because of Jason committing suicide, but I was a little hopeful and happy for Peter, because I got the feeling that he was moving on, he was going to live his life the way he wanted to without interference, and I kind of sensed that his mother had accepted him, from their moment near the end.

Steel Pier. I love it endlessly, but i choke up at the end every time...
Adding to the Aida posts.
I always get depressed at the end of Into the Woods.
West Side Story
Really, jcm? I always found INTO THE WOODS very uplifting and happy.
I thought the Steel Pier ending was sort of upbeat IMO for the Ziemba character

I think PARADE is the most depressing musical ending I've ever seen. Beautifully done though.
I thought the end of "Funny Girl" was depressing (the movie, that is -- I never saw the stage version, so don't know if it was any different).
