Des McAnuff as a director

For people have seen shows directed by Des McAnuff what has been the general response to the work? His role as a director? Strengths and weaknesses?

His work is slick and well-produced, and appropriate for the kind of work his chooses to take on. But it's not my cup of tea.

"Slick" is a great word to describe his work. Sometimes overly slick, in my opinion. I think his best work was on Jersey Boys - it had just the right amounts of grit mixed with glamour. Summer and Ain't Too Proud were essentially done in the same "style" as Jersey Boys, but were far less successful in their executions. His revivals of Guys and Dolls and Jesus Christ Superstar both suffered from being way too slick. His productions in general have a precise shiny sheen to them, and it doesn't always work.

I think his Jesus Christ Superstar was the best acted production I’ve ever seen. If you were lucky enough to sit close there was a whole other show to be seen in the three leads facial expressions. I think he is capable of getting exceptional performances from his actors. I’m still bummed that production did not receive a cast album.
