So I have to ask, what's everyone's problem with Tavi Gevinson????

Tavi was exceptional in THE CRUCIBLE. I can't wait to see her in this.

I don't understand the hate Gevinson gets around here. I liked her in THIS IS OUR YOUTH and thought she was one of the best parts of THE CRUCIBLE. Perhaps some are jealous that, given her prior notoriety, she's been able to break into acting so easily.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I thought she was terribly one note in This Is Our Youth, and I found her grating. The performance, to my eyes and ears, was shouty and not at all grounded in reality, and I felt Kieran Culkin and Michael Cera both outshone her.

In The Crucible, she gave essentially the same performance, though it was slightly less grating there. Her posture is also AWFUL which to me is unacceptable for a theater actor.

I don't understand what's so "inexplicable" or "ass-hole"-ish about widespread dislike for a particular actor. As others have said, I found her performance in This is Our Youth to be extremely unpleasant. Everyone I know who saw her in that disliked her performance as well. The idea that people's criticisms of Tavi is a result of jealousy is laughable. Is it really that plausible that such a large number of people would express negative feelings about her performance just because we are all jealous of her?

Having said all of that, I did actually enjoy her performance in The Crucible.

I like Tavi a lot as an actress.  She was quite good in the film Please Give.  I caught This Is Our Youth at Steppenwolf and she was extremely good, captivating.  To be honest, I thought she gave one of the very best performances in The Crucible, a production I found disappointing despite some of the artsy experimental touches.  The scene where she becomes possessed was an incredible piece of physical acting.  I bet she more than holds her own in Cherry Orchard.

I saw her in This Is Our Youth at Steppenwolf in their upstairs space, which is smaller and intimate.  She wasn't shouty and grating there at all.  But I did hear that about her performance after the show moved to Broadway.

Could it be the director's fault?  Anna D. Shapiro is a very fine director in smaller venues, but when I saw Mother****er with a Hat on Broadway I was stunned by the amount of shouting on that Broadway stage (EDIT:  I didn't censor the title BTW, the administrators did).  Bobby Cannavale was practically bursting a neck vein he was shouting so loud.  Only Annabella Sciorra seemed to have any delicacy in her performance.  The other actors sounded hoarse.  Also, Shapiro has a tendency to have her actors march on through laugh lines, shouting over the audience members as they laugh.

I thought in The Crucible Tavi gave the kind of grounded performance I saw her give in Youth in that smaller space.

You're free to dislike her performance, but I'm really confused by the last sentence. What does posture have to do with being a theater actor? There isn't a set "thespian posture." Actors should carry themselves in whatever way the role calls for.

To be fair, I haven't seen This Is Our Youth, but I thought Tavi carried herself fine in The Crucible. Mary Warren is a scared servant, and she's cowering in a corner half the time. It would have been bizarre if she were strutting around with regal bearing.
