I've heard very interesting things. Quite the turn from Phantom 1.
Click on the West End Board. Someone went and gives a detailed description. Doesn't sound like this show will do as well and the entire plot is described so don't read the entire thing if you don't want to know how it ends. Scroll to the last post.

Having read The Phantom of Manhattan as well as the spoiler on the West End Board I can see how ALW lifted from the book quite liberally even after saying that the two would be different. The biggest difference is...
SPOILER
...Meg. I don't care for that change one bit. And I don't think the die hard Phantom fans will either.
I just read the review on the West End board, and wow....I mean....just wow. I can't believe he actually went there with the plot.
after loving the music i'd heard so far, im sad that the plot is how it is. i think they need some major plot overhaul if they want this to work!
The plot & descriptions of some of the effects sound so hilariously terrible, like some horrowshow that has to be seen to be believed. It's like ALW thought, "Hmmm. What if I took all the characters from the original and made them act 180 degrees differently from how they did before! Yeah, that'll work!"
This plot sounds hysterical! I truly hope it makes it across the pond!
Please tell me this plans to open in New York in August. Sounds like a hell of night.

It actually sounds fantastic to me, but I liked Woman in White AND Dance of the Vampires, so what do I know?
And I should say best thread title ever!
OK, is it so bad that it should warrant me buying tickets for when I'm in NY in December because it has absolutely no hope of coming to Australia as planned? I don't know whether I should avoid all spoilers and witness the horror first hand or just cave in and laugh at it for the whole year.
I hope I'm making sense, because I am really tired.
Goodnight.
It's amazing to me how so many people have bought into a few negative postings from one preview performance. I mean, I know lots of folks on here hate ALW's stuff and then the other extreme is the obsessed Phantom phans who all think they can write a better story or feel some ownership of the original that they're angry ALW didn't listen to their suggested ideas or storylines.
For me, who is an ALW fan, saw Phantom I think 3 times - I kind of doubt that all of these talented, creative veterans would have concoted the "train wreck" that some are speculating/hoping/reporting is playing. The three pieces of music I've heard from it are enjoyable to me, and what I'd expect from ALW. I have avoided reading all the plot descriptions because I'd rather go in with some element of surprise when I do see it.
But honestly, what is with all the haters on this board? It's bizarre, everytime ALW does something new, it's like the knives get sharpened up all over again...
Just checked the West End board and someone posted that Sierra Bogges was out on Saturday night with a 103 degree temp. and her understudy went on and was very good.

Well there's your answer right there. It's the plot that people have a problem with. It's nonsensical and pointless.
I've enjoyed some of ALW's work and am not a hater but what I've been hearing about the show for some time has been worrying me. There are certain elements of the plot that I don't think will sit will well audiences - especially the "diehards". Especially what has been done to the characters of Raoul and Meg.

OK i know you are an ALW fan but you are making yourself sound silly. Many brilliant and creative people have written bad shows or flops before, look and R and H with Pipe Dreams or ALW himself with the Beatiful Game. Anyone no matter how brilliant can create a bad show.
You have heard THREE songs, the people writing the reviews have SEEN the whole show. Their simply commenting on what they saw during that 1st and 2nd preview performance, talking about the book, music, set etc, most of which will not change by opening night.
Instead of accusing everyone of being nasty to ALW why don't you stop and think that maybe this is what people actually thought of the show, because at the moment the omly one who seems to have an agenda here is you, to defend something you have not seen and discredit the people who have seen it by saying their ALW haters. How silly
Just read the review on WE board.... must see this now! West Coast first?

chernjam- There are MANY examples of why this is a ridiculous statement, but one needn't look any further than another sequel, "Bring Back Birdie."
"Bring Back Birdie" was written by Charles Strouse, Lee Adams and Michael Stewart, and directed by Joe Layton. It starred Chita Rivera, Donald O'Connor (my bad!) and Maria Karnilova.
It doesn't matter how amazing you are, or what track record you have. Everyone can make (big) mistakes and have their share flops.

Donald O'CONNOR was the star of "BRING BACK BIRDIE".....not Sutherland.

As WhizzerMarvin et al astutely pointed out, it happens to everyone. Charles Strouse and Jule Styne I believe are still the record holders for number of musical flops by a Broadway composer (feel free to correct me on this), yet both have contributed landmark shows to the musical theatre canon. Talented, creative veterans are not immune to turning out train wreck shows. And this particular show sounds like the sequel to Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera. And that is NOT a compliment to anyone involved.
ok, that plot sounds kind of crazy, but seriously how hot do they both look in this video?

Is she an 80's pop diva or a turn of the century opera singer in that video?
