I can't attest to the "least used," but Merwin's definitely very talented.

Well to give you some background as to where I come from...
Here are my thought (from the 5th Preview of A Chorus Line thread)
I personally think that shows such as A Chorus Line should not be revived or on Broadway in the first place. Theater is not place where controversial issues should be expressed (Tits and Ass, Pauls Monologue), keep em in the newspaper. Broadway should be a place where everyone can just have a good time. What happened to shows like 42nd Street and Guys and Dolls? Those are the kind of shows that should be on Broadway. Not shows like RENT and Les Misarables, which are so depressing that in the end nobody likes them.

If anything, they're the least loved pieces of Musical theater over the past century

I think that Broadway has become a place with CRAP shows. What happened to people like George Gershwin and Irving Berlin. Now we have Sondheim and Schwartz who can't write music if thier life depended on it. That is why I don't see thier shows anymore.
