Well, Sunset Boulevard didn't really have competition in 1995, and I don't think it got great reviews.

Phantom of the Opera, Titanic and Passion all received mixed reviews, if memory serves.

also, A Chorus Line, and the original Chicago... 42nd original company would of been panned had it not been for Merrick cancelling press previews and Mr Champion dying. Thank you PBS lol i know facts now.

lso the original Chicago didn't win any awards because it was up against A Chorus Line. But, Evita got both mixed, raves, and pans and received around 6 or 7 awards including Best Musical.

Aida got lousy reviews and won several Tonys.

Well, lots of musicals with bad reviews won Tonys. Hugh Jackman for Best Actor, anyone? The question was whether they won Best Musical Tonys.

Um, Wicked and Millie got mixed reviews.

Once again, Wicked didn't win Best Musical. If we're going to talk about what musicals with bad reviews got one Tony or another, we'll be here forever.
Well, we've had more pointless threads before, I guess.

If a show gets panned, then it's not likely to win a tony for best musical. It might win other awards though. Why do you ask.
I don't think Brooklyn will win it this year.

I wish I could kill the person who wrote the show PASSION!! AAAHHHH!!!

Um, what? I think PASSION is one of Sondheim's best. It is one of those "you have to see to understand it all" shows.

The original La Cage wasn't trashed, but the general consensus was that Sunday in the Park w/ George was a better show, yet La Cage won the Tony for Best Musical, Score, Book,Director and others.

The Wiz got a very mixed bag of reviews and it was borrowed money and a dynamite commercial that put it over.
Evita
Cats
Titanic
Hallelujah Baby
Passion
All had a mixed-to-bad set of reviews. The last three lost money. Also those three seasons were very weak for musicals.
42nd Street did get a good set of reviews and A Chorus Line got some of the best reviews of the century.
The critics and intelligencia loved Sunday in the Park. However audiences hated it and so did a lot of the rank and file Tony voters.

If by "critics" you mean "Frank Rich pushed it for all it was worth," then yeah, all the critics loved Sunday in the Park With George.

Yeah, Les Mis opened to terrible reviews;

Critics are dumb!
