>> Les Mis opened to terrible reviews
... every single one of which it earned.....
I would so love to kill you right now, Sean Martin. Spider and bronxbound, PASSION did open to mix-negative reviews. Doesn't mean it wasn't good, I personally haven't seen it. But as you said, it's a very controversial piece and sorta needs to sink in.
Didn't Wicked receive some bad reviews, but it walked away with 3 Tonys.
Wicked reviews did receive some bad reviews. But it also received some raves. One of the only non-dramatized facts stated in the Broadwya: The American Musical Documentary stated was that the reviews for Wicked were divided.
Les Miz certainly did NOT receive a negative review from the most important critic: Frank Rich.
Some pretty creative posts in this thread.
La Cage got better reviews overall than Sunday in the Park with George, though Sunday got a Frank Rich rave. Rich's review of La Cage was good, but qualified.
Passion had deadly buzz during previews, but I remember it opening to pretty enthusiastic reviews. Not wild money notices, but not mixed-negative either.
Robbie is right too, about Frank Rich's notice for Lez Miz. I remember him equating "One Day More" with the "Tonight" quintet from West Side Story...high praise indeed.
Yes, but many other critics found the show confusing and dark. They thought much lower of it when it was in London.
