that's too bad. I would love to see a big revival in an opera house sometime with new direction

Actually VeuveClicquot , there were plenty of Greek theatrical devices used in Marie Christine. The stage was raked which gave the stadium feel to the piece. There were the 3 prisoners who acted as a greek chorus. The fact that the other cast members (as Prisoners) watched the action as it came in and out was Greek in nature and also reminded me a bit of Man of LaMancha.

I haven't seen the show but don't get how people could say the show isn't immediatly melodic. I love Sondheim and like Guettel but have more trouble with their music than LaChuisa. I find Marie Christine extremely melodic. Nearly the whole show. Pretty darn hummable.

Good call, jazzysuite. You're right.

And still... that staging didn't work for me. Great piece, wrong staging.

I'm just saying.

I agree, buffy. Then again, i also think buffy is an incomparable piece of art. re: Did anyone actually see Marie Christine?

Anywhoo, I find most of LaChiusa's music to have some of the most beautiful melodies my ears have ever heard. I do, however, think many of his productions are misguided. I loved LaChiusa's work on Bernarda Alba but found the production kind of cold. I can imagine Marie Christine being the same way. Overall, I'm not a huge fan of Graciela Daniele's body of work.

I think that alot of it is very hummable. Especially "Cincinnatti" and "Way Back to Paradise." The music is written for a serious singer, not just an actor with some singing ability. It is difficult stuff, but glorious.

Michael John LaChuisa's music is gorgeous in this show, but the thing that made it stand out, was that it's subject matter was so different from anything that has been seen before. Depressing, like Parade and Passion, but daring and new.

I loved the show, the music and the story, as I love everything he has written. But I realized what a marvelous show it was when my parents (not particularly fond of musicals) raved about the show. They still talk about how great it was. I even caught my mother listening to the CD on her way to work.
