I just saw the 1999 animated film version of The King and I the other day at my younger cousin's house. All I can say is Oh,my god. I don't know what to correct first. I don't know if it should be the random animal sidekicks, the typical Disney bad guys or the the fact that they bastardized a great story.

Posted: 1/21/08 at 1:41pmEven though the film was made by Fox, it did have a Disney quality to it. And although it deviated a lot from the source material, it was entertaining. Sure most elements could be corrected, but most kids won't know the difference.

Disney quality? Have you seen it? IT'S HORRIBLE.
Disney quality is Prince of egypt, for example

Posted: 1/21/08 at 1:44pmThat thing that they call a film is horrible. After being in a production of the show, I realized how much that movie took away from the musical. I don't even think the kids who saw it liked it. Bad, BAD film.

Never cared for the stage-version nor the film-version of THE KING & I, so this animated one was avoided as well.
I do have Jodie Foster's ANNA & THE KING film on DVD, which I've yet to watch. Hopefully one day in this lifetime I'll make the effort.

emmadny: Yes I've seen it. And it has a Disney quality. For example: many charicteristics were changed to be suitable for children, just like in The Little Mermaid, or Sleeping Beauty. It has happy, and cheery musical numbers, but also a few "nasty, scary ones!" [/sarcasm].
Of course it's not a carbon copy of a Disney animated film, but it resembles one.
And plus, Disney does not always produce quality. Like...Beauty and the Beast.
I certainly do not think it's the worst animated film I've ever seen. I couldn't sit through The Prince of Egypt, as much as I wanted to.

"SONDHEIM, Disney have great animated films, altough you don't like fairy tales or children films, Disney make wonderful animation and King and I don't have good animation.........."
That comment about Disney was a joke. I love Disney films, and I enjoy Fairy Tales. I just meant that Disney, as well as Fox changed many aspects of their films so they could be suitibal for children. It's no big deal, but my point was that people were complaining about aspects being changed, when Disney does the same thing.
I don't understand how this version of The King and I didn't have good animation, though. The editing looked fine to me.

I know, that's why I said it had Disney qualities. Don't worry, I hope most people know that not all animated films are made by Disney.

I read a few reviews and stayed away! It does have Christianne Noll as the singing voice of ANNA, though. That's a plus.

Posted: 1/21/08 at 2:38pmIt was bad, but entertaining. I was young when it came out. I bought the picturebook and junior novelization. I did a book report that included a comparison to the dEborah Kerr/Yul Brynner film vrsion.
