someone was saying on the board recently that there are lines in shows that they completely despise and think wreck the show entirely. 'they' started this schpiel by thinking about the workshop of a stage adaptation of 'dirty dancing' that happened a while ago...
well...
i have news for you all!
for those who don't know, Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story Onstage has been playing in Australia for the last year (finished its Sydney season, currently playing in Melbourne and doing well for a world premiere)
as someone who has seen the show, i can assure you that the line is alive and well! the entire concept of the show is bizarre, as none of the cast actually sing, although it IS a musical. it's all very odd
basically, the scene itself is very tense and dramatic, and all of a sudden from the back of the orchestra seats, johnny castle comes sprinting down the centre aisle, and yells, "Stop...NOBODY PUTS BABY IN A CORNER!"
well, the audience goes nuts. it gets a standing ovation every night. completely stops the show
dear lord save us all...thank goodness for the dancing
you have to check out the link, it's hilarious
rumour is that it will possibly make the big move over here soon. what do you all think? it definitely needs some revising before anything though
thoughts?
THE DIRTY DANCING OFFICIAL SITE
why is this thread called Footloose when it's about dirty dancing??
Sad but true, this is huge over here. Playing at 95%....The press ad's for the show make fun of the sad lines that are in the show...Press here reported show opening in London's west end Sept 2006, Broadway 2007...you have been warned !!
but the real question is:
does he say it in an australian accent?
Good question ZZ
I was also wondering why it wasn't posted in the thread.
Anyway, I must say that this description is extremely intriquing.
I want to be in a theatre where Johnny Castle comes running down the aisle and the audience erupts into cheers. Sounds like a blast.
Sad part is, 700 Queens screaming and clapping...oh well you know us "Aussie"s"
Australian accent, well we don't hear it ourselves, but the answer would be yes
yes, it is quite a disaster. if they were able to successfully intergrate songs into the already questionable book, i'd say it has a better chance of winning over international audiences
but at the moment, the american-australian mish mash of accents and everything is quite disconcerting
the dance is great. high energy, clearly based on classical technique, with a contemporary feel. there are a few funked up rend de jambs in there...it's certainly an entertaining night out.
would you go and see it?

I would go, just because Dirty Dancing is my anti-drug.
An interesting side note to this...When the original workshop was presented in NYC in 2001 (which sadly was in rehearsals when 9/11 happened) it was called BABY LOVES JOHNNY...Miramax who owns the US rights, would not allow it to be called DIRTY DANCING: THE MUSICAL. It was directed by Diane Paulus & Randy Weiner (who then went on to direct THE DONKEY SHOW).
"rumour is that it will possibly make the big move over here soon. what do you all think?"
ooh, good. just get it out of my city, lol. those bright pink trams are EVIL.
