Friday me and 10 friends went to see All Shook Up. As we were walking to the theater at about 7:15, we pass the Imperial Theater and see Norbert Leo Butz and Sheri Rene Scott casually leaning against the wall outside the stage door eating their dinner. The street has plenty of people on it, but no one is talking to them, probably because not many know who they are. I got very excited by seeing them and my friends wanted to take a picture. We went over and asked them, but they ran into the stage door saying "Sorry, we have to go get ready for the show, we can't stay out here anymore." They were not friendly at all and did not seem in such a rush to get ready when they were leaning against the wall talking. I can understand that they didn't want to be bothered, but then don't stand outside your theater right next to a giant picture of yourself!!!!!
All Shook Up is a fun show. It's cheesy and campy and WAAAAY better than Good Vibrations. The ending is stupid and doesn't really make sense, but the music arrangements and choreography are very good. Nikki James and musical director/conductor Stephen Oremus both went to my High School a few years ago and were very nice when we spoke to them. If you have nothing to do or want an enjoyable time in a theater, see All Shook Up.(just not for $100)

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:08pmI'm sorry I don't blame them..it was 7:15..for an 8pm show..They were in a rush..they're allowed to talk to each other because they are friends and they're in the show together..I wouldn't blame them at all. And I don't blame you for going over to want to talk to them..It's best just to wait until after the show. Sorry they didn't stay around, but you can't be mad at them. :)

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:11pmI'm not really mad, just disapointed. It was the way they did it that upset me, the really weren't going anywhere before we tried to talk to them, but when we came over, it was like they were running from aliens.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:13pmYeah, I get why you'd be disappointed, but before the show is not really the best time to catch performers.

I hear what M is saying - they weren't running in the door until they had a couple of fans asking them to pose for a picture, which would have taken one minute.
I agree - if you don't want to be bothered with people, then don't stand outside the stage door next to life size pics of yourself.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:14pmI can't really blame them because it was so close to showtime but it's weird that they ran away like that. I don't mess with actors before the show because they might be in a *mood* so just wait till after the show. I've met them after the show and they were really nice.

I agree with GirlforTartaglia. Given the time constraints, I really can't blame them, you know?
There have been many reports of Sherie, Norbert and DRS gang being friendly to fans at the stage door after the show. :)

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:22pmas I performer...I know that that close to showtime I don't really like to talk to anyone other than people involved in the show. Because I need that time to stay focused and staying focused to me also means surrounding myself with those people. It makes me nervous in a way to talk to people who aren't part of the production because I get in "the zone" at least an hour before the production and it's different talking to people who aren't feeling the same vibes. I don't know if that makes any sense...because its hard to explain. Maybe they could have done it in a nicer way but I could see where they were coming from if that's why. And I've also met them both before after the show and they were really nice...so I don't think it was that they were trying to be mean.

#10re: Dirty Rotten Egos and All Shook Up
Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:24pmAgain, they weren't rushing in the door and being stopped by fans. They were casually leaning against the wall when they were approached. If they didn't want to talk to people, they shouldn't have been leaning against the wall in a relaxed manner on a public street.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:28pmYea they were eating. Norbert had a styrofoam take-out box and Sheri had a green organic drink.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:36pmI understand why you're disappointed, but for a lot of reasons, before the show isn't the best time to catch the actors. I've run into one exception who used to have it made known that if his fans wanted to see him, they should come before the show, but other than that, it's not typically the time to stop them.

I agree, I don't think they were trying to be mean. If it was one fan, maybe that would be easier, but it sounds like a group of people (10)? And they were busy eating.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:45pmIf you were in their position, and you didn't want to be approached, would you actually stand outside your stage door eating your dinner at 7:15, which is when people would be beginning to arrive to see your show as well as other shows on that block? If you don't want to be approached, go inside. Simple, simple, simple.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:51pmI dunno, I think they deserve a break. It was a nice day, they were eating outside...
#17re: Dirty Rotten Egos and All Shook Up
Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:55pmFine, if they want to eat outside they have every right, but isn't it then obvious that they could very well be approached by fans? Common sense.

If they want to have a bite outside the theatre I don't see that as an reason to have to sign autographs and take picture for a huge group of fans. I am also of the opinion if it was one or two I may feel differently.
The respectful thing is not to interefere with people while they are eating or before a show.
I am also one of the people who thinks it incredibly rude to ask for anything from a celebrity when they are out, such as at dinner.
After the show at the stage door is a relaxed yet still apropriate time, unless the person has an agreement like the one Emcee was speaking of it simply seems inconsiderate.
All in my opinion obviously.
eta: yes Rath they should expect to be approached, but not required to stop and respond.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 5:57pmI don't know, yes, common sense says they'd be approached, but it's that age-old argument about whether it's their job or not to take pictures and sign autographs. They can be as open to approach as they want, and be perfectly aware that that might happen, but it still doesn't mean, even if they're aware of it, that they have to say yes.

Again, it's the profession they chose, and they know what comes with it. It's their choice to stand outside the theater as people are arriving, but then they are most likely going to get approached. That's what happens.
My best friend is a performer, and although she's not a huge star by any means, she does get approached when we're eating in restaurants, at the theater, etc., and it does annoy me to a point - but I'm not the one who chose to be in her position, so I have a right to be annoyed (although I'm certainly not rude enough to show it outwardly). She is gracious as can be, always, whether she's eating, or in the ladies' room. Yes, people will talk to actors anywhere. And Butz and Scott and my friend have it a helluva lot easier than "real" stars, believe me. So they can at least be pleasant, especially when they choose to be in the line of fire, so to speak.
ETA: I don't get annoyed at people wanting to talk to her because they admire her, I get annoyed at our time together being interrupted.

I understand those sentiments, and the reality of the situation. I do feel however there is a large responsiblilty on both sides to be repectful. Someone may approach you in the restroom, but to say "I'm sorry, I have other business to attend to" should not be considered a slight.
I do not believe that just by being in the public eye you give up the right to be treated with dignity, and to establish boundaries as you see fit.
#22re: Dirty Rotten Egos and All Shook Up
Posted: 5/15/05 at 6:08pmI agree that they should at least be pleasant when they're approached, but that's too idealistic. And they *did* have a show to do in 45 minutes. If this had been at say like.... 6 p.m. I could see taking further issue.

Pleasant, sure. Accomodating to a group of fans before the show? Not their job.
As an aside, I was at a restaurant last week when Gregory Jbara and his family came in and sat down next to us. Would I have loved to tell him how much I loved his performance in DRS? Sure. But he was out with his family, having dinner. Not the place. (Although his son did try to steal our fries.)

Posted: 5/15/05 at 6:10pmI get why they wouldn't, seeing as they were in the middle of something. Still, It would have really made a fan's day. Sometimes a star doesn't realize that.
