Dirty Rotten Egos and All Shook Up

I had just seen him earlier in "Jelly's Last Jam" and later ran into him on the street. I didn't want to infringe on his time but simply wanted to take a moment to extend my sincere thanks to him for a memorable evening. He did something so sweet. He asked me my name and personally thanked me and then extended his hand and we shook. For me this meant more than an autograph or a picture.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 11:46pmI've said this before, but I got a hug from Hank Azaria. I asked him to do his Apu voice, and he did the accent, saying " Icould but I usually charge money. No seriusly, give me money!" and I told him I'd give him a hug, and he said "i'll take that. that's better than money." So nice!

awww, that's really sweet. He seems like a pretty personable guy, but I haven't dared brave the Spamalot stage door.

hahaha! Not that small, but I really don't know how safe it is to brave that.
I shall get my hug elsewhere, alas.

Posted: 5/15/05 at 11:59pmEw, there were these nasty ratty kids there who were getting multiple bills signed. I overheard them talking about getting money off of them. How rude! They were all pushing me and stuff. I was thinking, go away your gross and skeevy and ugly. These guys are nice enough to spend their extra time to sign fans bills, and you're taking advantage of it in a bad way.

Posted: 5/16/05 at 2:37amWell Em, I'm shorter than you even if you don't believe me, and am planning to brave the Spamalot stage door Wednesday afternoon. I'll let you know if I survive.

Not the same thing because I am a lowly community theater performer, but I'm reminded of a show from last summer where I was Arnold Wiggins in "The Boys Next Door". I had the opening monologue and I was playing Arnold as manic and OCD as possible. The theater was at a church, and patrons need to pass through the hallway that also connects to our stage left entrances. Anyway, for my show prep, to find Arnold, I would pace in a circle for thirty or forty minutes before the show in a room adjacent to the green room so I could open the show in character in appropriate frenzied condition. In one particular performance, my sister happens to be heading to the ladies room just as I am getting into my spot so I totally spaz in character and the stage manager shooes her away.
Just a thought that everyone's stage prep is a little different. Of course, I suspect that polished Broadway actors turn it on and off far better than I.

Posted: 5/16/05 at 10:04amHmmm..not good Norbert and Sherrie. It's Tony time...you need to be nice. :) I agree with Rath's earlier posts. If you don't want to be bothered, don't sit outside the stage door beside your picture. It sounds like they were in no hurry until someone dared to ask for a picture.

Personally, I think a performer's only obligation to the public is to perform. That is, to give 100% on stage, and 100% in rehearsal and all show prep. The rest is all frosting. Granted, those who handle themselves with dignity and class and accomodate often demanding fans are personal favorites. I just don't think performers are OBLIGATED to do the extras, because they are just that: EXTRAS.
Oh, and I also think preshow prep is sacred, and needs to be respected.

7:15 is not close enough to showtime to warrant a mad dash to the wings. >>>
I disagree.
An actor's prep time is whatever it needs to be.

Posted: 5/16/05 at 10:21amI agree with Mike. The performers responsibility is to entertain the audience.

Posted: 5/16/05 at 11:01amThere were 11 of you. I think that explains their reaction. That was way too much to inflict on performers just before a show. You should have thought twice before you went over en masse for a picture.
