I still say if they get some one like Hunter Foster in when Norb goes I think they can still keep the dynamics going. & YES while DRS is NOT selling out it consistantly performs well @ the B.O. rarely dipping below 86 % and on wkends freq 98%+.

I was less than thrilled with it when I saw it. On the plus side I thought Lithgow was just incredible (and I've never been a fan of his before) and Joanne was very impressive. Norbert's character completely turned me off. It was just stupid. (I'm sure this must be a matter of personal taste so don't bother flaming me for my opinion.) Sheri was OK.
I thought the lyrics of the music were wonderful but I didn't fully appreciate them until I got the CD and was able to listen to them carefully. Some of the music was pleasant but for the most part it was forgettable. The more I listen to it, the more I like it - I'm just not in love with it.
I remember being very impressed with the costumes and wondering why the show was overlooked in this area. Other than that, nothing much. If I did return to see it again it would just be to see Lithgow. He completely broke me up. (Somebody else mentioned Daniel Davis as a possible replacement for John. If the show lasts that long, it would be a good fit!)
All in all, I thought Spamalot was much, MUCH funnier. That's one I would like to see again.
A click for life.

Posted: 6/18/05 at 1:55pmI think Norbert took the character Steve Martin played and made it more outrageous, in a good way.

Posted: 6/18/05 at 1:58pmI thought the character was a bit too over the top in the beginning...but as the show progressed I think Freddi definetly got a bit more depth...

Posted: 6/18/05 at 2:00pmPut me in the minority here too. I found it a major disappointment. I loved the movie but found the show overall kind of amateurish. After that "Oklahoma" number, it just kept going downhill for me. I found Norbert's character really unattractive whereas I adored Steve Martin in the movie. I really did want to enjoy this show and surprisingly after seeing it found myself enjoying the CD much more than I expected to after repeated listenings yet I still have no desire to see it again.

I think it was written like that in the movie itself.

Posted: 6/18/05 at 2:05pmI thought the movie dragged a bit and the musical did not IMO...

I enjoyed DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS very much, but it did feel like there was something missing that I couldn't put my finger on; I left the theatre feeling merely satisfied, rather than wowed. The lackluster choreography definitely compounded this feeling, as did the tacked-on subplot between Muriel and Andre. Joanna Gleason was fantastic and glowing with stage presence, as usual, but her part was underwritten and superfluous. When she said, "I think I have something to do in Act II," I thought it was a self-conscious jab at the fact that she really doesn't have anything to do for the entire show.
I don't quite understand how the original poster could hate the show that much, though, because at the very least it's a strong, competent production. And Norbert performance is worth the ticket price alone.

Posted: 6/18/05 at 2:21pmI thought the choreography was the best part for some scenes...Oklahoma and whenever Lithgow danced was rioutously funny

Posted: 6/18/05 at 2:45pmI have commented privately that I found the whole score freq reminiscent of other music. Esp the overture ( Pink Panther-ish) & Great Big Stuff reminded me of Martin's "King Tut" But I've begun to believe these references are deliberate. Maybe that's what's bothering people- familiarity w something that's new?
