Disney and Broadway

At first I really disliked the idea of taking Disney shows and putting them on Broadway. But I realized that they are often decent stories, and once they add some songs etc. They have become brillant on stage.
I would love to see Mulan or Pocahontas done on stage. I personally have some great ideas for Pocahontas, involving a revolving stage, lots of blue lighting and wires (OH! and dancing men in Mine! Mine! Mine!). What would you like to see from Disney to Broadway?

Mulan would be amazing, thats one of my favorite Disney movies.
as for staging, i see lots of asian inspired sets, and for the scenes in the mountains and such very blue/white, the revolving stages for pocahontas sounds very good.
lea salonga would have to be my mulan, hands down, as for my Shang idk...it'd be an amazing musical though.
Sleeping Beauty could be good as well, if done right.
if i had time i'd go through all my disney movies and see which would make the best musical, but i'll spare everyone

Of course Lea Salonga would have to be Mulan! She did the singing voice in the movie!
But I agree that Pochahontas(sp??) and Mulan would be great. The problem is all the fight scenes and stuff. I don't know how'd they'd stage that, though- maybe they'd just change it a bit. But they're fantastic ideas.

*Smacks self* Thats right!! Lea, my favorite B-way actress. Definately she'd be Mulan.
As for Pocahontas, Judy Kuhn did do the voice for the movie. But I don't nessarily think that someone of Indian background has to do the role. (Sorry if this offens anyone) But with some spray on tan, and a wig, anyone with the right voice and body could be cast.
Wire usage I think would be cool for "Colors of the Wind" but chorographed well so it doesn't end up like Peter Pan.

LITTLE MERMAID would be best. Great songs, great plot, great characters, GREAT VILLAIN!, and I can only imagine how it could be staged! A lot of the show would have to be underwater, which is no problem.
I could also imagine some nice blacklight effects, etc.
This show MUST be done!

Posted: 6/17/04 at 8:26pmYes, LITTLE MERMAID!

Posted: 6/17/04 at 8:26pmYou are so right Mister Matt! I LOVE the music of Hercules! The music rocks! I don't like the story because it's not really true (Hercules was Roman, not Greek, Hera was bitch, not a nice little pink lady, etc.) If they changed the story a little, but keeped the same music, it would be the best Disney show.

I love the Hercules music! Roger Bart does such an amazing job on "I Can Go The Distance".
I'd also love to see The Little Mermaid and I love Aladin but I don't think it would translate on stage.

Posted: 6/17/04 at 8:35pmOf all the disney movies... I would definately love to see Mulan happen. It's the one movie I can think of where its all about the strong heroine and not ending up with some suave charming prince... I think into the woods teaches us not to fall for those tricks. I mean lets face it when families come to New York they are often going to see a broadway show, and disney is a big hit with families. Why not make it something inspiring to the little girls in the audience.

Posted: 6/17/04 at 8:41pmTARZAN is first, then MERMAID. Technically, MERMAID isn't 'confirmed' for Broadway yet. I'm thinkint 2007 or 2008, if it happens.

Posted: 6/17/04 at 9:30pmI think The Hunchback of Notre Dame would be great! I would love to see "Topsy Turvy" staged.
#15re: Disney and Broadway
Posted: 6/17/04 at 9:33pmThere was a staged version of Hunchback that played in Berlin for a while about a year or two ago. Wonder why they didn't bring it to the West End...

Posted: 6/17/04 at 9:37pmYeah, well, I want it in the US, where I can afford to see it...

Posted: 6/17/04 at 10:17pmThe Herc. music is great. My personal fave is Zero to Hero. How would they do The Little Mermaide costumes? What do you do w/ the fins?

Posted: 6/17/04 at 10:38pmI want to see Aladdin, because I could be Aladdin!!! Also, it has some really nice characters in it that would be great for the stage. Just think of the Jeanie(sp?) numbers!

I would say Hunchback too, love it!
I didn't know that Tarzan was coming first. I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinions, but why?? *Just watch, I'll end up being obbsessed by it when it comes out*
I thought AIDA was a stupid idea now it's one of my favorites

Posted: 6/18/04 at 12:01amAIDA is one of my favorites, as many of you know. I don't remember Beauty and the Beast very well, but I remember being competely mesmerized by The Lion King. I'm reallyyyyyy excited for Tarzan, y'all know why... speaking of which... Greekmusicalfan, where are you? I'm also really excited for Mary Poppins (that is still happening, right?). It was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and I definitely see it working on stage.

I think Mary Poppins is whats being worked on now. Last I heard Tarzan got pushed back a year, it was originally supposed to be ready for 2005.

I am right here my beloved luvtheemcee :) :) It's just that lately I am splitting my time between bwayworld forum and numerous Madonna forums :)
I just thought of not repeating myself on my craving for Tarzan, I've said it so many times ! And by the way i'd love Aladin, it's one of my favorites !!!
And by the way, since AIDA closes early September, I soooo hope that Adam will be at the Broadway flea market, since he'll probably be in town. Now, if only Matt could make it too !!!
Take care

Nope, TARZAN was not pushed back a year (if pushed back at all, less than a year), it is still first.
How would they do the Mermaid costumes? What a silly question! Have you seen THE LION KING? ANYTHING is possible!! ![]()
HERCULES would be great, but it has lots of swordfighting with HUGE monsters and creatures, in addition to the monsters that Hades unleashes at the end of the fil. It's gonna be harder, in my opinion, to pull off more than MERMAID.
I look forward to MARY POPPINS the most! The show is gonna be great!
