That article was brought to my attention by a girl in my computer class about 5 minutes ago. I love TARZAN.
Wanna see MARY POPPINS!

Posted: 3/16/07 at 2:51pmRevenue and profit are two entirely different things. I find it hard to believe that Tarzan is turning (or will ever) turn a profit...and Mary Poppins isn't the hit Disney wanted it to be. They will sell tickets for sure, but the Disney brand won't save The Little Mermaid if it is a mess in Denver.

there was one really good point that makes me take Disney a little more seriously.
And that is that it does bring in new audiences. How many posters on this alone first got into theatre b/c of a Disney show? Anything that exposes theatre to new generations is a good thing.

And any profit made from POPPINS has to be split with McIntosh.
They sure like to blow their own horn don't they?

"Does it make anyone else sad to read this article?"
Me.

True, but there are thorns, and sometimes they are bigger than the rose.
"the success of the movies the musicals are adapted from ensure a longer run than many other shows regardless of critical acclaim.
While Tarzan received mixed reviews but continues on Broadway, "Lestat" flopped and closed within two months."
We have a problem!

Wasn't Tarzan a flop in theaters?
You want people to go to Broadway, but people going to Disney projects doesn't necessarily translate to them going to other non-Disney shows.
it's brand extension
Though the cynic in me thinks CamMac could make a mint with "Eponine: the doll"

Posted: 3/16/07 at 3:19pmDisney though they have wonderful MOVIE musicals, Disney Stage Musicals...yawn, I just saw Tarzan and thought, well the Gorillas are fun to watch, but this show has no substance. I'd rather see 10 "In My Life's" thank pay to see another Disney show. But then I don't go to the theatre to see Spectacle.

TARZAN ths film was not a flop at all it made $171 Million in American and another $277 million Worldwide. It was the #6 Grossing film in America in 1999 and #5 in the World
I also don't think the show is bleeding money like some have said, but then again I think people are a little harsh on the show to begin with.
They had to split Mary Poppins with Mackontish because while they had the wrights to their movie and the music, Macksontish had the rights to adapt Ms. Travers books for the stage. With the show selling well in both London and New York, I think there is no crying about profit..plus whenever a tour is launched it will be a huge hit

The "nut" for TARZAN has been rumoured to be about $600,000.
If you read the grosses you will notice that it has only passed that number a few holiday weeks, and most have been below.
Again, I say it is a rumour because DISNEY tells No one how much they spend.
And it has been reported that POPPINS is not selling as they would like.

When I was at BATB (for the first time) two weeks ago, there was a grandfather of a boy in the audience talking with a mother of two girls behind him.
He said that he took his boy to see BATB eight years ago as his first show. He went on to say that he can't behave in church, but in the theatre he sits and watches like a guard dog. Since, his son "dragged" him to Seussical, Phantom of the Opera, Lion King, and Tarzan. They were seeing Poppins the next day.
The woman said this was the girls first show and first time to New York. After the show, she asked the man about getting tickets to LION KING.
There is no question, for me, that Disney has brought families to the theatre that never would have gone otherwise. Whether it is the kids dragging the parents or the parents bringing the kids. It seems in the end -- all have been happy. I've never heard about kids/parents NOT liking it (although I am sure plenty haven't, I've never heard/seen this).
That being said, I think Disney recognizes this. They have a responsibility to bring a quality to their shows. Disney has mastered the spectacle element that makes kids (and their parents) go WOW! Now they need to work on their storytelling through their scripts.
