This is something that my friends and I have been talking about lately. I want to see what you guys have to say. What Disney movies should be turned into a Broadway show?

Posted: 1/27/15 at 12:54pmI know I would like "Tangled" to be done but like all Disney movies it is a matter of can it be done on stage. Also, can they add extra music because most films don't have enough for Broadway show.

Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy. They could combine the two and make one helluva show! I want a song called "I Have a Son Your Age (He's Unusual)" I really think it could be great.

I think Mulan would be the best choice for their next Broadway show. There's so much there (story, culture, feminism, score, etc) and it could really be a physically beautiful production.
Is there any future with their Jungle Book adaptation that was done not too long ago?

Posted: 1/27/15 at 3:54pm^ I think I read that Disney is taking it to Europe to see how it does over there. There's no doubt that Broadway is their goal with Jungle Book, but I think they still want to work on it.

Posted: 1/27/15 at 4:13pmIf they could figure out the before and after for Hercules becoming buff, I think it could be a spectacular musical. Maybe after David Zippel and Alan Menken finish Mrs. Doubtfire they could work on it! I would love that.

I'd LOVE to see Hercules & Pocahontas on stage. They could tweak the story line to include a younger actor to play young, skinny Hercules and a switch from young-to-old (a different, more muscular actor) a la Bonnie & Clyde during a number in the show. Also regarding Pocahontas - don't know if she can sing, but I always thought television actress Shay Mitchell would play a beautiful live-action Pocahontas.
Never been a fan of Mulan, but I agree that hearing "Reflection" live on stage would be thrilling.
I'd love to see Tangled (before Frozen, I think).
Would Pirates of the Caribbean be silly? And wasn't Honey, I Shrunk the Kids already in development? In addition to James and the Giant Peach and Tuck Everlasting from different companies? I've also heard whispers of a "Holes" and "Freaky Friday" adaptation.
I think Hocus Pocus could be wonderful. As well as The Princess Diaries or Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.
Then there's always Brave and Enchanted.
And, if done well, and extremely out-of-this-world inventive with staging… I'm picturing a Toy Story. The green army men could have a tap number! Hah.
Woooaaaah. Stepping on the breaks. Clearly almost two-days stuck in my apartment because of this storm has caused me to be way too excited about this. Apologies! It was fun, though.

Posted: 1/27/15 at 6:49pmPocahontas would be a good broadway production. But I think there would be a lot of criticism because Pocahontas was a real person and Disney's version was a "kid-friendly" remake on her life. People will expect Disney to base the show off of her real life. Maybe I'm thinking too critically. I would like to see how it does. I doubt it's gonna go to Broadway. I could be wrong. If Hunchback ends up going to Broadway, I think Pocahontas will be their next project… Both were made around the same time I think and it's a popular movie. We'll have to wait and see!

I doubt Disney would ever put Pocahontas onstage. Even though it was very profitable, it's usually regarded as a failure at the house of mouse. It got eaten alive by critics for it's historical inaccuracies and it's stereotyping of Native Americans. Funny enough, It is said that Disney had 1 group called The A group working on Pocahontas and the B group was working on Lion king, and many of the animators wanted to work on Pocahontas because it at the time seemed like it would show more promise and hopefully get a best picture nomination at the Academy awards.

Posted: 1/27/15 at 7:19pmMy younger sister is currently playing the title role in Mulan Jr. and she's having a ball. In the world of sets and costumes, that show could be beautiful on stage, so my vote is for MULAN and TANGLED (just because both movie leads, Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi could TOTALLY reprise their roles on stage if it comes in the next couple years).

Bilbo3, the critical reaction is exactly why I think they should do Pocahontas next. They could show how they've grown more culturally conscious since the film's release. Adapting it for the stage would be a perfect way to fix the problems with the movie.
Also, I just love Pocahontas, so I want to see it happen.

Posted: 1/27/15 at 7:35pmYou know it's funny, right after I wrote that, I went to YouTube and watched the "Colors of the wind" scene. Pocahontas is probably one of the most beautifully made animated films, art and animation wise. It's strikingly beautiful to look at. Some of the best that's out there.
