re: Dissenting opinion on Hair

You like squares. We like cubes.

I like that.

Anyway, I enjoy both acts of the show. I have always understood that they are entirely different in structure. It also opens kind of awkwardly. A little too upbeat considering how it ends. But besides that, it does a pretty good job of showing a different side to the characters' lives. I especially like the scene when they're all going home.

re: Dissenting opinion on Hair

Going back to the "Frank Mills" number, can someone explain this scene to me? The only production I've seen of Hair was a high school one (an odd choice for a high school, right?) and the number was cut. Though I haven't looked much into it, I don't really get the song...

Wishingonlywounds- The reason I started this thread was not to bash the show (believe it or not), but to hear why people did like the show, and to see what they would say in regard to my criticisms. If I'm missing something or not appreciating it for a misguided reason I'll be the first to make an attempt to reevaluate. This is all part of the process of taking in differing viewpoints and respecting all opinions, even if you don't agree with them.

LauraisBroadway- If you've heard the song you're more than halfway there. Chrissy is left alone on stage and delivers the song to the audience. It is the self-contained story of meeting Frank Mills and wanting to be with him although she doesn't know anything about him.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

re: Dissenting opinion on Hair

Basically, Frank Mills is a song Chrissy sings about this bum that she met and fell in love with. She gave him some money and it seems she didn't see him again but she's still waiting for him.

"I mean, Kacie Sheik's character is sort of mentioned once, and then she's just there for the rest of the show. Normally I think that would be bother me but because the show is done in such a non-traditional style, that it doesn't really bother me. The whole show is sort of disjointed, and it's interesting to see these glimpses into the characters lives. "

It always seemed to me Jeanie was the narrator of the show. I don't really like the way Kacie Sheik plays her. I much more enjoyed Miriam Shor in the 2001 version at City Centers. In that production, and in the original, I believe, Jeanie only really showed up whenever anything needed to be explained or when something needed to be commented on, IE the whole who's hung up on who monologue. Even Air is commenting on the pollution problem.

I'm kind of sad my favorite line of hers got shortened in the park version, and I'm assuming this version too "I told my mother I was in New York, she said stay in New York. I told my mother I was pregnant, she said stay pregnant."

re: Dissenting opinion on Hair

I think she does a great job. She just has something about her that I love.

Anyways, how was "Frank Mills" done in other productions, or is it usually cut? I don't mind the song only because it's a pretty melody and the show is so disjointed anyways, that it doesn't bother me. I mean, Sasha Allen's character is always singing, but we know nothing about her. It just sort of goes with it.

I just wish they had moved the stage back instead of moving it up, so that the mezz could see all the audience interaction and when the cast goes into the aisles. And I wish the scaffolding to the boxes was made to where the cast could easily run up and down it.

re: Dissenting opinion on Hair

I had always interpreted that the eponymous Frank Mills was never seen again because he was drafted.

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

re: Dissenting opinion on Hair

I always thought Frank Mills was just a sleazy guy who took this girl's money and never gave her a second thought, while she's here basically singing a "HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN?" poster out loud.

re: Dissenting opinion on Hair

Thanks. I suppose I assumed there was more to it than the basic lyrics. It does seem a bit out of place and odd.
