I know this may be a dumb question, but I'm hoping someone out there may know the answer. We have tickets to see Piazza and DRS the Saturday before the Tony's. My wife is concerned that there may be understudies because she is convinced that the stars will be resting or practicing for their Tony night performances. I realize that each show is unique and there might not be a blanket answer. I was just curious if anyone knew of past history. I do not want to see understudies for either show. Thanks for any help you can give me...cause now I am a little nervous.
I don't think you have anything to worry about. It is more than likely that the original cast will be performing in the show the night before. Some shows may be dark on Tony Sunday, but most shows will play.
DRS is a blast...enjoy!
Agreed. I've never seen an understudy in the week leading up to the Tony Awards... too much excitement in the air.
It would be pretty rude and unprofessional to "save it up" for the Tonys by taking time off from your actual show - the show that is the reason you're to perform at the Tonys at all...

Also, they perform every night. Doesn't seem to me like it would be different for that.
Well, Tony day is definitely different since they have a tech run of the show that starts at about 9am, and runs until the early afternoon. But it shouldn't affect their Saturday performances.
Yes, but the few who are actually performing get right in and right out. They're not hanging around that whole time.

Most shows still perform the Sunday as well...
I remember an interview with Sutton Foster explaining that she had a show the day of the Tonys and then went to a rehearsal and then performed at the awards...
My guess is you have nothing to worry about. I don't think "stars" of shows are in need of a rest up period. Whether true or not, I've read more than once in the past that casts of shows are surprisingly better on a Wed/Sat evening performance after "reving up" with the matinee performance beforehand. I have to admit though, I was VERY surprised that given Christina Applegate's foot problems that there was a matinee performance of "Sweet Charity" before the official Wednesday night opening. So hopefully the Tony's won't have any effect on the attendance of the stars in the shows you'll be seeing. I'm sure rehearsal time for the show is scheduled around their performances.
It's a crazy, busy week for them...but they run on some sort of adrenaline that must be thrilling. The only time in recent memory that someone took off before the Tony's was Tonya Pinkins last year taking off her Sunday performance and letting her understudy go on instead so she could "save her already ailing voice" and we all know how well that turned out! Ugh!
Last year thay cancelled the Sunday performance of Boy From Oz on Tony day (plus Hugh was hosting). Of course full cast performed Saturday...

wait, so show's still perform the sunday of the Tonys? Obviously the obc can't go on since most of them, if not all, will be at the Tonys, right? or how does that work.

It's a matinee performance. The Tonys are in the evening.

Oh okay, so they go on for the matinee, go home, get ready go to the tonys? cool, thanks.
It seems like you stand a better chance of seeing the full cast on that day as well as the Sunday matinee than at any other time. I've been in NY on Tony weekend for the last few years and I've always managed to get last minute tickets to nominated shows and they've NEVER had a missing cast member.
I remember last year that Stephanie D'Abruzzo mentioned she did a show the day of the Tonys. So yeah, if there is a matinee that day, the original cast members will most likely be performing. For the actors and everyone else working in the theatre, it seems to me like they view the Tonys as a big party that's televised. And they're performing for their friends and peers. And the people who write on this message board. So, I think it's low pressure for the theatre community at an event like this. I could be totally wrong, but I'm guessing that's how it is.
