I think you have a very nice voice. There's something there.
Wow you guys, thank you so much for listening and giving me the much needed advice, critique and now the confidence to really commit to ignoring the naysayers, doing some solid vocal work and following this dream.
My belt has always been an issue because i seem to get so anxious as to how loud it gets so i would clamp down and freak out a bit. I think it stems from hiding in a closet and singing as a kid so no-one could hear me.
So thanks a million to everyone who replied, i really have appreciated all your comments. You broadwayworld folk rock! xx
annabelle, don't be too quick to envy American performers. Yes, we have more total performances, but we also have 12 times the population of Australia.
A friend of mine directs the state theater in Perth and she works more than most American directors I know. For one thing, you have state theaters and we have no real equivalent.
They may not run as long, but all the best American musicals eventually play in your country as well.
One more piece of advice - and this was a BIG help to me. I had issues with breath control and with my belt and I started running... Yes, running / jogging helped increase my lung capacity and helped my belt by leaps and bounds...I started off as a dancer who could sing well - to a singer who was called back for Fantine in Les Miz on several occasions. Basically, any kind of high impact cardio... and the best thing about this - it's free!! (and a nice workout....)

You can sing..the first part is really great when you went up you kind of went "pitchy" but this is easy to fix ..You should get training I agree with the others. It is worth it because you would knock people out once you do !!! GO FOR IT !!! I give you credit for putting it out there...LIVE YOUR DREAM !!
"At the very least you can get to the West End and Canada I think."
Trust me, don't come to Canada. Our theatre sucks a lot. Everyone I know here who wants to go into musical theatre plans on going to the States ASAP.
You're good!

"not Broadway, i'm an Aussie so that ain't ever going to happen"
Tell that to Toni Collette.
(Toni, if you're reading this, we'd love to see you back on Broadway!)
^^^I love Toni Collette, but until I rewatched CONNIE AND CARLA the other night, I'd forgotten just how good a singer she is.
Somebody needs to write her a show -- STAT!

You definitely have a nice voice. Pursue the training and start giving some auditions a try. I actually really like your voice. Great for theatre. And I love that you don't have the pop start whine that a lot of girls have now. Really classic sound. Go for it! I'd suggest giving some Sondheim material a shot. Follies, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music maybe.
Awesome advice everyone. I've joined the gym last week so i loved the tip on using cardio to improve my belt and breathing.
I've had 2 sound engineers contact me asking me to send a recording of just my voice and they will mix it with the instrumental and work their magic. I cannot believe how amazing you folk have been.
I would love to do lots of Sondheim but no one had ever allowed me to sing it because it's "to difficult" to accompany. But i have learn't Millers Son, and Broadway Baby a while ago.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what song i should send off to get recorded? Songs that my voice is suited for.
Thanks again ever so much, i've really been blown away by the support and advice you guys have given me
I had a similar problem with my belting, my coach used to say it was physiological, because every time I was about to hit a high note my voice broke. I was afraid of singing the notes to my full potential because of how loud I could get. It also had something to do with being afraid of people hearing me. My solution was to start belting in the car, where nobody could hear me, except for my dad. This really worked for me, I found out that I had no problem reaching the notes, and I stopped having the belting problem. I would suggest you find a place like this for you where nobody can hear you and sing your heart out!
As far as suggestions go, I'd love to hear your rendition of Somewhere from West Side Story.
