In response to Mister Matt, Pinocchio has already been developed for local/regional theatres under the title Geppetto & Son. It features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) and book by David Stern. However, Disney decided to base the stage musical on the television musical and not the animated feature film.

Geppetto & Son made its debut at the Coterie Theatre in Kansas City, MO in 2006.
