Well the 1st show is over after a long stressful day and went very well

We had a few people leave (i think 3) which we expected since this show is not everyones cup of tea (very immature and silly show lol)

We all had a blast on stage and had some great responses.

Photos coming very soon
Thanks for all your messages of support, it means a lot X

Caught the show last night and just wanted to congratulate you guys. Thought every minute of it was fab. I particularly loved Marcy and Lucy. Well done, hope you get to take it to the big smoke at some point.

Our first review, What's On Stage (Positive)

Review - Dog Sees God

January 23, 2009

Date Reviewed: 23rd January, 2009
Venue: The Lowry

4 stars

Bert V.Royal’s Dog Sees God is a very clever and witty take on the famous Charles M.Schultz characters of Charlie Brown.

Do you remember Snoopy, Peppermint Patty and Co? Their images featured on everything from birthday cards, duvet covers and pencil cases, back in the day.

Well, imagine if they all grew up and ended up f***** up, as that’s the wickedly funny premise that Royal explores in Vertigo Theatre’s UK premiere of this off Broadway hit.

C.B (Rick Carter) and his dog Snoopy were inseparable in the old days, but his beloved pooch has since passed away, leading him to soul search about the meaning of life and doggie heaven.

Meanwhile, Schroeder (Craig Hepworth) is now named Beethoven, as he still loves playing the piano but he also a few skeletons in his closet, and is closer to CB than they both care to admit.

The central hook to this zany, yet often poignant production is nostalgia for lovers of these very ‘adult’ kids from the past. They always were very Woody Alleb-esque in their musings on life, so the fact that so many of them are now wasting their lives is utterly believable.

But for anyone too young to remember Charlie Brown and Co, there is still much to enjoy thanks to Royal’s beautifully drawn characterisations and the cast’s energetic performances.

Carter is totally convincing as the protagonist; confused and analytical at the core, yet a doofus at heart. Hepworth is warm, sympathetic and sorrowful as the piano playing loner. Mike Gates makes a convincing debut as Pig Pen (Matt) and Louise Allen’s Sally is Maureen from Rent meets Stawberry Switchblade.

Adele Stanhope and Emma Salt steal the show as dynamic double act Tricia and Marcy. They totally inhabit their Mean Girl personas and are both hilarious throughout. Stuart Reeves and Emma Willcox have cute cameos and Willcox in particular is pitch perfect as pyromaniac Lucy Van Pelt.

A few scenes at the beginning seem overlong and could do with some trimming, particularly the opening voiceover intro, whereby the actors stand covered with their cartoon personas, as you long for their real faces to be revealed sooner. But for the most part, this warm hearted production has a fast pace and the laughs keep coming.

If you love fringe theatre and high quality performances, Royal’s irreverant play has cute comedy versus edgy elements and the two blend with ease, thanks to Vertigo’s terrific team work.

Dog sees god is a pile of s**t!

lol....

now seriously, i take my hat off to everyone in this show, its the first play i've seen in about 6 months that hasnt sent me to sleep. its so nice and refreshing to see that there are people out there who can still perform fresh, exciting pieces of theatre and not make them dull and boring, or become complacent in their roles.

A credit to all involved, the show deserves to go for longer. its the best thing i've ever seen performed in the studio at the lowry, and i hope that it can be re-produced again elsewhere to get this seen by other audiences

beautifully staged, each character was totally believable from the outset, and most importantly you could clearly see that each cast member was having a fabolous time, which at the end of the day in my opinion is what its all about!

My only wish was we could see more of CB half naked (for those of you who don't know the guy who plays CB is gorgeous. haha....) and it certainly deserves the 4 stars WOS gave them!

well done SADM2!

(now you can pay me later for this yea??? lol)

re: Dog Sees God - The Lowry 2 weeks away yeeeah.Read a great interview wit

I came out of August: Osage County knowing I'd seen a great play performed by a great cast but not quite satisfied. A play that gets the Pulitzer Prize has to have something specifically American about it and I felt August's themes were universal and not unique to the American experience. There was no dissatisfaction at Dog Sees God - this play gave me so much to think about I missed my turning on the drive home twice. This play was not only about the Peanuts characters as teenagers but it explored their attitudes and pshychology through the filter of that American Christian fundamentalism that we don't have over here. Hate crimes are born of hate in the UK, they're not born of supposed Christian zeal.

But this was no dark, brooding preachfest; it was an acerbic and in-your-face comedy. And the cast pulled all they could from their characters. Emma Salt brilliantly demonstrated how Marcy could grow from the bespectacled geek into a sex geek and Emma Willcox managed to combine being funny, scarey and nutty as a now institutionalised pyromaniac Lucy. Rick Carter gave authentic voice to the child still inside Charlie Brown's grown body, and Craig Hepworth gave plenty of clues as to how Beethoven's journey to adulthood had been beset with problems and traumas and that there wasn't going to be an easy resolution. And when Beethoven was hunched over his piano pumping his right arm apparently against the keyboard, he could easily have been doing something else. It should also be noted that Rick Carter's underscoring was also very effective.

I'd agree with the WoS review that the initial voiceover where the characters are introduced still needs some work. The clarity and conviction isn't as strong as it needs to be to grab the audiences attention. But that set aside, for £7.50 these guys are massively underselling themselves.

(and when Lucy came down into the audience shining torches in faces and asking if anyone had seen Beethoven I was tempted to shout out "He'll be posting on BroadwayWorld.")

Well we are done and over the moon happy with the response. We were a little disappointed at the last night audience as they were not as responsive as they have been throughout the rest of this run and the Taurus Run, but hey, different audiences are expected, they did however give us a huge applause at the end.

We have had such a great time, feedback was brilliant, the reviews great and it sold very very well.
The show will now move to the Edinburgh fringe festival with the same cast.

Next up for us,The Laramie Project opening June 30th
