Don't miss Eileen Atkins -- 3 more chances

Any fans of genuinely superlative acting -- please don't miss the sublime Miss Atkins in RETREAT FROM MOSCOW this closing weekend. The play is far from ground-breaking, and in (too) many ways, predictable domestic drama. But La Atkins offers a true master class in playing an UNpredictable journey through a very ordinary life. The role of a controling, sour woman on the cusp of untold change provides her -- and thus, us -- with an opportunity. Watch her find a moment-by-moment emotional reality, devoid of scenery chewing; it's the kind of honest work that's too often missing on the stage. Three more chances, alas. It doens't get much better than this.

3rfrow: You're right. I think the character holds us, because you can see she's irritating (to Lithgow's husband), but your heart breaks for her plight. I think it's a 3 dimensional woman -- gnarly, not always easy to warm to -- who, bewildered by the hand she's suddenly dealt, fights for everything that has ever mattered.
