Reminds me of when she was on Leno. But honestly, a comedian's job isn't really to pay attention to things like that, but rather just to be funny -- and if they're not good at it, they say stupid things. *shrug* Whatever. If she made people laugh, then she probaby did well, publicity-wise.
Jon Stewart was definitely kidding. "Rent 2" is a joke from the Behind the Laughter episode of The Simpsons.
i hate it. my school choir last year sang seasons of love, and and with the movie coming out now everyones like I LOVE RENT I KNOW ALL ABOUT RENT....blah blah blah

Having read this entire board I find myself wondering exactly what Rent is supposed to be about. What exactly has it inspired the various Rentheads to do? Has it made them more aware of the plight of the homeless? Has it turned them into AIDS activists? Has it encouraged them to work in support of the rights of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transexuals ect... Has it made them more interested in Avant Garde art? Do they now support performance artists? Have they been encouraged to see other theatre (not just Broadway shows)? Have they investigated "La Boheme" the opera this show was based on? Has it made them look at the way artists are funded in this country? Has it made them aware of gentrification? Or is it all about wearing the t-shirt, knowing all the lyrics to the songs and feeling superior to others?

Eh. Let em' like it for the movie. Just don't try and tell me that since you like the song "Seasons Of Love", you're a Renthead. Don't think it hasn't happened. It has, and I had to count to ten so I didn't deck the person. =p
Danielm: in response to your post, for me personally:
Has it turned them into AIDS activists? -Yes.
Has it encouraged them to work in support of the rights of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transexuals ect...? -Yes.
Do they now support performance artists? -Yes.
Have they been encouraged to see other theatre (not just Broadway shows)? -Yes.
Have they investigated "La Boheme" the opera this show was based on? -Yes.
Has it made them look at the way artists are funded in this country? -Yes.
And I'm sure many other people on this board would've said yes to many of your questions, as I did; we're not as shallow as you may think.

I'm sure many rentheads arent shallow--but this whole string is about T-shirts.
If many Rentheads aren't shallow, and if in many cases, the answers to your questions are "yes," then no, this "whole" thing is not about t-shirts. Yes, posts on this thread mention t-shirt wearing as something people do that's bothersome, but in my opinion, people are only so up in arms about that because it's more tangible than calling someone out on how they supposedly feel. This isn't all about what shirt you wear, or how many Rent shirts you own. That's presumptious to assume.
Yes, I do. It does annoy me, but sometimes, I PRETEND to be interested that Idina Menzel was IN FACT in Wicked.

I will admit to banging my head on the wall when 3 people in one day were quoted at saying "OMG that guy from Law & Order is in Rent! Who knew he could sing!?" It's frustrating when people claim to know everything about a topic that they really just like a lot, but with Rent I am glad that the message is getting out there. If people are wearing the T-Shirt and singing Seasons of Love then fine, at least they won't be a part of the people who (like my brother) say it's all about poor people who can't get jobs or (like my father) insist it is all about the "homosexual agenda".

I really agree, and sometimes I feel really selfish, but I just hate the pretentiousness that goes on in my life. I'm from a small town in Canada and people from larger cities I go to University with often assume that I'm a *new* Renthead and therefore they say things to me like, 'well that's nice, but*I've* been a fan of the show for 4 years and *I* know all the lyrics by heart and blah blah blah." I'm not a really show-offy kind of person, but *that* really makes me want to yell out "I fell in love with Rent eight years ago, I've seen it twice once in Toronto in 98 and once on Broadway in 2004, it's how I met my best friend, it's shaped me into the artist I am today, Jonathan Larson is my mentor, it's made me more aware of people living with AIDS and shaped my views on homeless people and the needy and my politics..." But usually I just roll my eyes and leave so I don't start screaming at anyone. Thanks for letting me rant about that. I feel better.

I can totally agree with the original post, after a while I stopped reading the whole post, but I got the gist. I think the same thing that is happening with Rent right now around you guys is happing to me with WICKED. It bugs me. I try to be optimistic and say that the people becoming obsessed with WICKED may also be interested in other theatre; but when I talk to those people they don't know much about the show itself, let alone any other show.
I am kind of an outcast when it comes to my tastes (I'm a broadway singin-NASCAR lovin 16 year old from central Illinois!!). Needless to say, I don't really fit in, and it's fun, sometimes I feel like a selfish or overly-touchy person when I get mad that people are jumping on my bandwagon, without knowing what it really is. My saying is that I'm obsessive with a purpose. I plan to perform for a while after I get out of college, before I go to get my law degree; I don't just listen and sing to broadway/disney because I want to go against the grain, my dream is propelling me against the grain. Wow that was long and choppy. Sorry!!
my two cents
Yeah, it's annoying. And most of they brigded over from the nearly-as-close-as-annoying Wicked fandom.
The movie hype is up, and I hope to God that there are not 700 posts about the movie in here, or anywhere but a personal blog or website.

As much as I am not a fan of RENT, I do think it has some awesome, dedicated and wonderful fans (whome I love because they are wonderful people). I to hate bandwagoners as well, because it makes me annoyed at people who I do like!
I personally will feel the same when alot of bandwagoners come on board when "Dreamgirls" get made.
I feel the same way about this. I consider myself a Renthead, although I understand that most people wouldn't consider me one because I'm only 15. I've been a fan of Rent for about three and a half years now, ever since I heard Take Me or Leave Me preformed at a talent show. I had no idea what it was then, but someone said the song was from something called Rent. After hearing that song, I had to hear more, so I went to a store and bought the highlights CD. I became obsessed and listened to it constantly. Eventually I bought the full CD and read the script. I know some of you have seen it one hundred times. Sadly I have only seen the play once. I live in Baton Rouge, so we don't get many broadway plays here. I finally saw it last year. And I think I've listened to the soundtrack every single day for about 4 months now in anticipation of the movie. [And probably annoyed everyone in my house, considering the volume was all the way up and they too had to hear it every day.] I mean, it just never gets old to me and I don't think it ever will. And so I consider myself a big, big fan of the play [and now the movie]. So when I see quotes about rent from this girl who goes to my school, who not only was not a fan of rent before the movie came out, but somehow got to BE IN THE MOVIE AS AN EXTRA because her dad was friends with someone in the movie and she happened to be in New York at the time, it really irritates me. I would give anything to have been able to have been in the film and meet the cast members, and she got to do that because of who her dad is. I know I should be happy that it's getting new fans, but like others, I feel the need to keep it something special. And another the bad thing about it being a movie and available to anyone is that people who don't appreciate it and everything that it stands for now can see it easily. I mean, now anyone can pay 7 dollars and get to see it, [and ruin other people's experiences at the same time.]
I saw the movie just a few hours ago and I was unfortunately sitting next to some people who did not appreciate the movie at all. They definitely let everyone know it by commenting on how digusting everything was..etc. It irks me that people who won't appreciate it now get to see it, and that people who have heard Seasons of Love, or have known about the movie for all of a week think that they are fans.

Don't you find it as immature to be effected by others supposedly jumping on the bandwagon at a later date than the original RentHeads? I'm just happy that the message of Rent is still being spread to people of all ages. That's what should count, not making petty insults to those who obviously were not exposed to the play at an earlier date.
