I can see what you're saying Wickedrocks, but perhaps it's because I got into the series because the film came out, but I did what you are describing for Serenity. I hadn't seen the series at all, barely knew what it was about, and went to the movie and fell in love with the writing, the characters, the setting.
Perhaps it is like this for those people who have only seen the trailers or such and are acting like RENT fanatics, they're really excited because they can now accessibly see the show that has moved, inspired and given joy to thousands of people in several countries. I myself will need to bring at least a tissue box when I think of all the people that will be exposed to these characters and this story.
See, this is why I have THIS for release day:
*cackles*
ugh, i have a friend like that. I got her into sex and the city which i've been a fan of since forever and just recently we stopped being friends and now she has all sorts of quotes from it on her profile--- yea i think a lot of people might put rent quotes to make them seem so cool that they know the show before it came out? idk.. its not making them cool.
Well, you all bring up valid points, but the day of, Im comin' in with my RENT movie t-shirt (official film memorabilia from ebay) when theyre going to be like "OMGIZZLE I CANT WAIT FOR AFTER SCHOOL!!!!!!!!! THE MOVIEZ$ OUT AHHHH!!!11!"
I'll be quiet and content in my Rent shirt when no one else is wearing one and is only supporting it by fake shrieks of excitment. I'll fight this war all by myself and silently. :)
Well, that is if I dont explode. Because I may just blow up at them. I just dont know if I can hold it in... :-/
oo me and my bestfriend were just discussing how were wearing ouring RENT shirts on the 23rd! *rent power*

I hate when people have only seen the trailers and bought the soundtrack start calling themselves Rentheads. No, you are excited for the movie, you are not an obsessive fan of the musical. There needs to be a new term for fans of the movie, because that *seriously* bugs me.
LOVE it, Emcee!!
Im excited that just about everyone i know regardless of if they like musical theatre or not is really pumped for the movie. but it made me cringe yesterday when i was looking at someone's profile and the best way to describe this girl is preppy laguna beach fanatic.. and she has all these rent quotes in her profile. but she combined a rent quote and another random quote thats not from rent together.. for some reason she thought they went together. LOL so yeah THAT bothers me.. when ppl pretend to be cool b/c they have rent on their away messages/profiles and they dont know what they are talking about..
Why should you think any less of them because they weren't familiar with the show before the movie came out?
----------------------------------
I dont think less of them. I dont like look down on them because of this. It just really annoys me. And like I said, these people suddenly obsessing over it HAVE NOT seen the show. And I know that for a fact. Because Ive asked the ones that have come up to me (knowing Im a RENT fan) and have talked about it. They havent seen it. I asked if theyd ever listened to the OBCR. No. But most of them "love Seasons of Love". Do they know anything about the show besides the fact that it deals with AIDS and that its a rock opera and its going to be a movie?
I highly, highly doubt it. THAT is what annoys me. And the fact that just because theyre fake RENTheads, they think they know everything and anything about musical theater.

yeah, same here. i like the show and am very excited about the movie, but i am still faaaaaaaaaar from a renthead...im just a broadwayhead, always switching my love of shows at certain times :)
but i have lent people my rent cd to help them get excited for the movie..is that bad? but im not obsessed dont worry ( everyone in my class still thinks i love disney world which was very 4 years ago but oh well...)
so yeah...
oh, and what else bothers me is the number of rent threads up now, but oh well, i dont really care...as long as theyre rent movie reviews and not "you're a renthead when..." threads, im good!
Emcee I'm stealing that! Haha...there are so many "I loved RENT before the movie" avatars floating around LJ.
I haven't had run ins with anyone well pretending to know more than they do about the show if they have not seen it. That I guess is irritating. Enthusiasm for the show isn't.

pft. I'm using that as soon as clock strikes midnight on 11/23. I claimed that thing MONTHS ago.
Haha...I plan to use it elsewhere. So many fun places online to use AVs.
Oh my God. I was on the phone with my best friend whining about this litterally two minutes ago. I hate people coming up to me telling now how much they love Rent, and when I ask when they saw it they say "oh- well, I just saw the trailor." I'm glad people are excited for this movie, but they shouldn't claim that they're a Rent-head unless they can at least tell me a hell of a lot about the show and the people in it. At least that's my opinion.

I agree. I haven't been with RENT from the beginning. I mean, I was only about 5 when it came out. However, I got into it 3 years ago. I am kinda worried about a bunch of people at my school becoming "RENTheads" though. A bunch of them have told me they're going to go see the movie. *crosses fingers* Hopefully, they won't become TOO obsessed.
That icon...is priceless. :)
If people love it after seeing the movie, I'm all fine for that! It's great that the musical is reaching out to more people, but what I hate is...well "two-faced" people. (I guess that's the correct term) The ones who "love" Rent, yet never even made an effect to listen to the soundtrack (even if it is the movie one, which is terrific, I believe),find out about the actors, or more about it.
A big example is when people say "I love Phantom of the Opera!" And I am a huge Phan (and I only...::clears throat:: saw it on stage once) so I ask who their favorite Phantom/Christine/Raoul is. The usual response I get is "Well, I love Michael Crawford, but Gerry is so hot!" I then proceed to list my fav Phantoms (quite a list) and I get blank stares.
I believe I did have a point for this.

yeah, the gay drama teacher at my school has officially "obsessed" my class with rent by having them sing seasons of love...
oh, and that icon is hilarious, wickedrocks!
reminds me of one time in english class when this boy was lying next to this girl, and my teacher is like "why are you reaching into your pocket?" to that boy, and this other boy says, "i dont think thats his pocket..." it was pretty funny :)
sorry, random stupid story
It is slighlty annoying because I do want people to see the movie and appreciate it, but when I hear people singing Seasons of Love and thinking that's all there is to the movie, I'm thing it's more than that.

same, wizard
and for the POTO thing, yeah! that makes me think of this girl in a grade younger than me, and shes like "oh, i saw the phantom of the opera (movie)!i loved it" and i just wanted to say "oh really, well, i saw the movie AND the show on BROADWAY! wanna add anything else?"...yeah, it was a mean thought but toe well :)
okay, i am in one of my broadway show obsession stages, and the current stage is sweet charity. so could someone give me a song from sweet charity to listen to right now! (and if u dont know the song titles, say a number between 1-18!)
