I have kind of mixed feelings. I have always been annoyed with people who jump on the bandwagon for anything because its trendy to do so. But I am really happy the movie is creating new fans and hopefully they will support the Broadway production and the touring productions. One of those people being my dad who elected several times not to see it on Broadway (but mucho thanks for helping me win lotto) and now is curious enough to see the movie.

I wouldn't say that just because a movie of RENT am I becoming a RENThead, but it really sparked my interest. Well, in a way. I became aware of RENT after having first heard of tick, tick...BOOM! and loving the music. So I then realized that it was written by the same person who wrote RENT. I listened to a couple songs and loved them and then found out it was going to be made into a movie. I went out and bought the highlights CD and was instantly hooked on it. The inspiring plot and lyrics, the awesome music, Anthony Rapp's super cool voice, Adam Pascal, etc etc, and just fell in love with the show. Then I started becoming obsessed, lol. I bought the soundtrack and full OBCR and of course, went and saw the Broadway production and loved it and now I can't stop listening. So in summation..lol, I'm not a RENThead just because the movie's coming out, but because of TTB and the movie, it really got me to buy the CD in the first place. The end by Dirty Rotten Scoundrel.

Heh, someone posted about the preppy Laguna Beach fan that has Rent stuff in her profile. That's so like my sister. But my sister saw the tour of Rent with me last March and has been excited about the movie since then.

Also... don't you hate the pop-culture mags saying "RENT starring Taye Diggs, Rosario Dawson and Jesse L Martin!" Yeah, I get the fact that these are the most popular names, but branch out people!

okay, random depressing sweet charity obsessed moment (dont read if you dont want to-may be stupid to any non-sweet charity or non-bwayondabrain fan-im just venting!)

well, in august, it was a saturday, the day before we had to leave, and we were walking in times square, right near the palace theatre, and my dad's like, "im bored, lets go see a show tonight" so we're like YES!!! and my mom's like "which one?" and i was like SWEET CHARITY!!! so we go to the broadway ticket center building right next to the palace and ask for either producers tickets, or sweet charity tickets- but the sweet charity tickets were in last row balcony so my parents said "no, we can watch an in room movie tonight!" :O so that is one sweet charity seeing oppertunity smashed

then in september (we were going back to nyc in october) and my mom said she wanted to see another show, and again i said SWEET CHARITY! and shes like "okay, go look for tickets online, and get me the phone number for telecharge, and i looked up online, and we could have row H center seats, and i was like "perfect!!!!" so i give my mom the number and she says she'll order them later in the week so im all happy and like "yay!!!!" and then shes like to my sister "okay, im going to order the sweet charity tickets" and my sister said "no, christina is not talented, and its not supposed to be that great" so i get very sad, but we see spelling bee instead, and that was good, but i still wish i coulda seen charity!

and then my sis and i go on sweet charity rewards , and i get a cd, and my sis orders a shirt, and shes like "oh, maybe this would be good! lets try and save up for vip tickets" and all loving the show, till the shirt comes in and its a size MEDIUM instead of a SMALL and im like oh my gosh, just shrink it in the wash, but now she unlikes the show for not sending the right shirt size

okay, im done venting. (oh, and dont bash my sister please...or me)

okay, thanks for hearing me out!

-ME, the sweet charity fan

OH! BUT CHRISTINA ANSERED MY QUESTION IN A VIDEO ONLINE!!! :) :) :) :) :) ITS ON THE S.C. WEBSITE, THE QUESTION BY PATRICK! :) SORTA STUPID QUESTION, BUT CHRISTINA MAKES IT GREAT! :) :) :)

okay, im done

... same with the freakin' Phantom idiots. I have seen the show four times... psychotically obsessed since I was in third grade. Then suddenly the movie is out...

"Oh my God! Emmy Rossum is the best singa eva! Oh my! So beautiful!" Pisses me off.

Listen to the OBC, Canadian Cast, ANYTHING, I don't care if you haven't seen the show... just don't tell me that you know everything about it...

I understand where you're all coming from. I was 20 when Rent came to Broadway and when it won the Tony I held on fiercely to my sense of ownership of the show.

I also used to have that same sense of ownership when it came to bands that I used to see at tiny clubs suddenly headling at major arenas (David Gray comes to mind.)

I have slowly begun to realize that art in all forms - bands, shows, etc - belong to everyone. YES it is very frustrating when something you hold dear to you is suddenly loved by the masses. But in the end it's a good thing. Especially for the artists themselves.

At the signing yesterday the guy in front of me and I were talking about how it was amazing that much of the fans on line were anywhere from 3 to 8 years old when Rent first came about. But that just speaks to the strength of Jonathan Larson's work. It may seem dated here and there but its themes are universal and timeless.

I love that a whole lot of people are going to be following the lives of gay, bi, straight couples - (hopefully) cheering for a drag queen during "Today 4 U" and swooning during "I'll Cover You." Just the idea of that is awesome.

I started becoming a RENThead last June so I'm a fairly new one but I've been looking forward to this movie since I found out about it and I've actually SEEN the show unlike some fakers I've noticed...

It is a little touchy for me...

I've wanted to start a thread about this for so long...

I hate it, but in my school, RENT has become a fad. They saw me wearing my RENT shirt once and asked if i could get them one, which i would be happy to do...IF THEY KNEW WHAT RENT WAS ABOUT! If i was to ask one person in my school what RENT was about they'd say 'Eight friends', which is true to some point, but when they come up to me telling me how big of a RENT fan they are and how much their in love with it tends to bug me. Maybe i'm being too possessive about RENT.

This topic makes me...arghvfgesbdkghbdfjhg.

I too am a new RentHead (less than a year). My friend introduced me to RENT when I exhibited an intrest in theater (I'm only 15, sue me). I loved it. OSG was the first 'musical' song I knew, so I have a very special attatchment to it (introducing me to musical theater). The problem is, I live in Illinois with super-conservative parents, so I'll most likely never get the see a Broadway showing of it until I'm on my own. All things considered, I love it a lot for being into it one year and never seeing the show.

And then I found out about the movie. And I was excited--I can finally get to see it! So I started introducing a bunch of other people to RENT because they can actually see it performed (albeit on a screen) soon.

Sure, there are those just following the fad, but there are also those who will get Jonathan Larson's messages or become more tolerant (of sexuality or biracial relationships). If some people get the idea, then the movie is a success, and I'm willing to endure the torrent of fad-followers.

How old are you WickedRocks? If you are still in school like you said, than you must have been very young when you first saw Rent before it opened at the Nederlander.

But I cry a little inside, when I think about how RENT is going really, really mainstream.

My feelings exactly. I was *this close* to starting a thread similar to this yesterday because I was battling with the issue.

I think it's great RENT is getting out there, and RENT's message will be able to reach more people by being more accessible, but still. That little whiny, selfish, I-don't-wanna-share voice in my head is going "But I've actually seen the show! I'm a real RENT fan! I fell in love with Adam 5 years ago when I first heard of Aida, not when I saw the trailer yesterday!"

I'm not going to put on a front like I've been a fan since conception. I was only 9 when RENT came out in '96. I have been familiar with the show for a long time, and I saw it for the first time this past July. (And then again in October). I can only imagine what people feel like who have been fans of the show for so long.

-I compleatly agree Feathah, and I really hope that this movie will touch people with it's message as the show has all of us.

And just remember everyone, that within a month there'll be a new fad that a lot of these people will go after, and we'll be left with the new people that really fell in love with Jonathan Larson's work through this movie.

As the thread title says, yes I hate all these people jumping on board with Rent saying it is their favorite thing of all time now and claiming to be rentheads. (and sorry labecca, falling in love with Adam during Aida certainly does not qualify as a renthead!)
I agree with Feathah and am glad that so many people can enjoy the show now that they are older, and that the movie is accessible to more people. Rent can spread to so many people, it's message and music can touch thousands who could not see the show on Broadway.
However, I think most of you in this thread, if not all of you, are younger than me and I don't consider any of you rentheads. If you did not see Rent pre-broadway, if you did not camp out on the sidewalk outside the theater for the cheap front row seats (before they even had a lotto), if you did not see the OBC at least once, if you did not travel around the country to see the various tours, you are not a renthead.
I have that same sense of ownership with this show that others have claimed, and I don't like sharing it. But I will, because I want everyone to fall in love with Rent. I have seen the show almost 30 times now (and know there are plenty who have seen it many more), and I know how special it is. I hope anyone who decides that they are now a renthead really appreciates Rent for everything it holds dear in my heart.

Its just weird to me that at this time last year there was ONE person i could freak out with over Rent. There was ONE person i could sing every word to "La Vie Boheme" with and now.. theres like 10. I mean its really cool but its not the same.

Thanks liotte. I don't call myself a Renthead for those reasons you listed, and I've liked the show for 5 years. So when some kid comes along calling themself a Renthead because 5 weeks ago they bought the soundtrack, I'm almost hurt that they think it's that easy.

I also dislike people who whine about how they don't like qualifications for being a Renthead- but the term "Renthead" is clearly defined by certain qualifications in the Rent bible. I also love when you respond with that and then they ask what the Rent bible is. re: Don't you hate... (RENT related)

It was a reference for all the little kiddies who are like "OMGZ aDaM iS LyKe sOoOo hot!"

I didn't include that bit of info to try to jusitfy my RENTHEAD worthiness.

EDIT: If you notice, in my original post, I did not refer to myself as a RENTHEAD for the exact reason everyone as mentioned. I've been a fan of the show for 5 months. Thank you.
