Judi Dench and Jude Law... doesn't exactly say the "Bronx" to me.
Ugh.

Posted: 12/15/06 at 12:21pmAll the aspects of the piece that made the play so unique -- the fact that you only see the 4 adults (you never see the children, you never see the little boy) -- will all change and it will turn into nothing more than a piece of throwaway Hollywood fluff about those damn homo pedophiles (protect the children!). It will no longer be a piece about 'doubt'.

I think they're good enough actors to pull it off though. I'm not sure any movie star exactly says "the Bronx" to me except for maybe Sly Stallone and Marisa Tomei...
Meryl Streep was indeed the rumor a couple of years ago when they first started talking "movie" but then again, she's pretty much the "rumor" for every film project with a female lead over 50...

Well, Tony Danza will be doing the show at the Bucks County Playhouse with Fran Drescher while the movie is being shot, so I'm afraid he won't be available

"It doesn't matter who you put in this movie, it is not going to be a big box office champ."
DRIVING MISS DAISY was a huge hit based on a small intimate Pulitzer winner.
I think you're right, MB, but it could also be a very profitable movie: make it for $15 million and it grosses $30 million--a small profit but a pure one.

I would hate to hear Dench try that accent... She's as American as high tea.
But I'm SO there to see the following dinner theatre production:
Father Flynn - Tony Danza
Sister James - Marisa Tomei
Mrs. Muller - Dawnn Lewis
and
Sally Struthers - Sister Aloysius!
Slogan: We "doubt" you'll find a better deal for dinner and a show anywhere!
"Check your coats and your faith at the door!"
"It's just like Nunsense without the music and laughs!"

Maggie Smith did an American accent, southern, no less, in Ya Ya. Bad movie, good actress.
I would love to see Cherry in the role, but I doubt that will happen.

So all they have to do is move Doubt's setting to South Carolina and we're set!
While we're at it... let's move Shanley's Moonstruck to North Dakota... and Dreamgirls to Texas!

Meryl Streep or Judi Dench would be great as Sister Aloysius
and I like the idea of Zooey (don't know how to spell her last name) or maybe Anne Hathaway as Sister James
Very excited for this movie, though! Do you think it will be a limited release film like THE HISTORY BOYS, or one opening nation wide?

The Variety article said the movie would go into production in '07 but I assume that Hoffman, Streep, and Ryan all had previous committments though that doesn't make much sense since Streep was announced for DOUBT before MAMMA MIA! and that was filmed this year.
I hope it happens. It'd be great to see Amy Ryan opposite Meryl Streep. I wonder who they'll get for Mrs.Muller.
I still can't believe they got Hoffman for Father Flynn though, they might as well re-title the movie because nobody is going to "doubt."

Posted: 12/11/07 at 6:32pmI really like Hoffman, but would much rather see someone else in this role.
#47re: Doubt: The Movie
Posted: 12/11/07 at 6:43pmHe may end up being excellent and I do like his work a lot, but I really would rather see Damon, Wahlberg, Gosling or someone similar in the role. I really like the idea that the priest is of a new generation that plays in direct opposition to Sister Aloysius's traditional values of how the Catholic church should be run. it def aids in the doubt that perhaps she has that bias in her motivations.

#50re: Doubt: The Movie
Posted: 12/11/07 at 7:05pmIt's Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis. A friend of mine has a small role that bookends the movie. They had their table read about a week and a half ago.
