Not a Wildhorn fan, particularly, but I saw the most recent reading of Dracula. It's good, and may even quell some of the naysayers. Or maybe not. At any rate, it's a step in the right direction at a cohesive theatrical score for Wildhorn. See it first before pre-judging it.

I saw DRACULA at The La Jolla Playhouse prior to the show being in limbo and honest to god it was the greatest most satisfying piece of theatre I have seen in all of my life. Granted I've only been here for 18 years, but I cannot say enough great things about this production. It was absolutely breathtaking. The sets and the lights were so unbelievably alluring and magical I just....there are no words. And rarely am I ever speechless about a show but this time I was just utterly speechless. My dad said it was the greatest thing he had ever seen on stage, which isn't saying much but he doesn't really like musicals in the same way that I do and even HE said it was just awesome. We spent the next few MONTHS just trying to digest what we saw. The music was passionate. There were few ballads a la Jekyll & Hyde witch was surprising at first but it just worked. The special effects were the highlights. Smoke, flying ghost like figures, DRACULA being one side and then the other side of the stage in seconds, glass coffins filling with blood, images appearing and disappearing, the stake, and DRACULA walking center stage and then leaping down the orchestra pit. I swear my heart fell with him. It was one of the best things I ever saw. If this production is ANYTHING like the La Jolla production it's gonna be great. Sure, some people won't like it blah, blah, blah...whatever. I loved it. And I think most theatergoers will too.

Jekyll and Hyde was also very good before it went to Broadway. It just goes to show how badly producers can screw up a show. By the time J&H opened on Broadway, it resembled very little of the jaw-dropping musical it had once been.
I listened to the Dracula score and I didn't hear anything remarkable. It sounded more or less like songs that were cut from J&H. Who knows? Maybe they'll get this one right.

I can not wait for this show to make it. My wife & I are big Wildhorn fans. Even if J/H had been staged in its original form, the critics would still have crapped all over it because they do not like him . He writes "pop music" meaning music you can actually listen to. I have the Dracula demo & some of it sounds very true to the Bram Stoker novel & some sounds like he is trying to placate his critics.

yes missy, where did you get this info?? And would wildhor's dracula really be coming to broadway with Elton John's the Vampire lesat so close behind? I dont think two vampire musicals on broadway will fare well after DOTV. Not to mention to up and coming Young Frankenstein. With wicked still playing, halloween 2005 could be a real monster mash on bway.

yes i saw the la jolla production, not a wildhorn show at all, no big belty numbers, more sondheim-esque in music i would say, like "Passion" or "Little Night Music" to that effect.
The special effects were out of this world. they were draw dropping and gasp inducing, really. Some of the best effects, even better than some of the lion king stuff.

Yes, unfortunately this whole thing is a hoax. I mean unless they just had a meeting today and haven't made the announcement yet and missy was there or knows someone who was this is a hoax. It happens sometimes when people want to create controversy....

Missy could be right--after wanting to place it off-broadway, the dracula people decided that wouldn't work and have been looking for a Broadway house. I did not know which one, but if she heard one, she heard one.
