Welcome to the Dark Side, Matt! Brace yourself for the onslaught- it's less dangerous to talk about Wicked or question the existance of Liam than it is to dare to question the utter superiority of DRS over Spamalot.
But you're right-- at least from my point of view. I've listened to the Spam album non stop- those are some great songs. DRS is not unpleasant to my ears, but I don't hear the great hope of Musical Comedy on display. I always back up and listen to Ruprecht again, but Spam is just downright fun, start to finish. I guess that's why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors! It'll be fun to see what happens Tony Night. I won't be shocked if they deny Spam the Best Score Tony, but I'll be disappointed if it goes to DRS-- I just don't hear it's genius.

La Cage.... I think that people that saw the original La Cage are just underwhelmed by the revival. The costumes, choreography, pricipal cast and overall production are a fraction of what the original was. The opening number alone is a HUGE disappointment. The original had 4 full costume changes and this opening number had the cagelles (who are amazing!!!!) in a costume that could have been purchased from a dance recital cataloug. The only reason it won best revival is because it really had no competition.
ON TO Dirty Rotton Sitcom... the score is VERY VERY VERY similar to Full Monty, and the lyrics are fine, but at the end of the day when you walk of SPAMALOT you're singing some of the many fun catchy witty songs from the show.

I'm very sorry about my unclear posts earlier. Not that anybody cares, but I'm not anti-Spamalot. I like Spamalot AND DRS. I have seen both three times and I go back and forth about which I like more. I was just hoping that DRS would win more than best actor.
I'd also like to add that I'm still pissed about Sara not getting a nomination. She's a goddess!

broadway betty-"I think that Isabel Keating won too."
Actually, she didn't. She lost to Anika Noni Rose (Caroline, or Change).
I'm not that dissapointed with the DD winners (with an exceptional few..but I can't say I didn't see it coming).

Posted: 5/23/05 at 10:40pmI thought the best thing about the entire "broadcast" was the guys in the control booth being overheard to announce a scheduled "bathroom break"!!! I loved watching the various audience members schmoozing for the 10 minutes of downtime!

JoeKv99... less dangerous than talking about WICKED?!! My how the Broadwayworld.com times, they are a'changin'... Seems like only yesterday you could log on and smell the blessed scent of Wicked fans being roasted on a spit over an open fire... *le sigh*
((And on a slightly related note... I almost re-quoted that bit of LaCage's post myself, inserting "Spamalot"))

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm kind of glad James Lapine won for Spelling Bee. I thought the show and his concept were very well done. I was definitely surprised because I thought Spamalot would have taken the Drama Desk. This makes me ponder... Would this be able to happen on Tony night? Haha...
