Okay...so I only disagre w/3 Drama Desk winners...
1)William Ivey Long's costumes for LA CAGE are far superior to the SMAPALOT tripe.
2) The lyrics to DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS & SPELLING BEE are both far superior to the SPAMALOT tripe.
3) DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS is a far superior musical to that SPAMALOT tripe...
sorry for being redundent...but spread the wealth...SPAMALOT IS NOT THAT GOOD! IMHO!

I didn't see Spamalot but from hearing the CD the Lyrics in DRS are far superior! and from what I see of the costumes La Cage is better..and from what I can tell DRS is the better musical overrall!

I would have given revival to Sweet Charity.
The OUTER CRITICS CIRCLE, DRAMA LEAGUE, & DRAMA DESK have all given revival to 12 ANGRY MEN & LA CAGE AUX FOLLES...why some of you cant see how WONDERFUL La Cage truly is and just enjoy it for the spectical and telling piece of theatre it is...is beyond me...it does what it sets out to do (and there is NOTHING wrong with pure joy and entertainment) & I say BRAVO!

2 Disagrements..
1) Spamalot for Best Musical
2) La Cage for Best Revival
Yes- agree that DRS is a superior show to SPAMALOT but a juggernaut rolls over everything and that's what SPAM is. Be interesting to see how the TONYs go since so many of the voters are from out of town and are mostly interested in how a production will tour. SPAMALOT looks like it would cost a lot physically to tour. But except for that damned rotating set DRS looks much morecost effective.
Did you really have to start a thread JUST to bash Spamalot??? Come on.
I know people say Spamalot didn't live up to the hype, and even being a fan of the show, I can say that it really didn't... but I'm happy for the cast and crew anyway. And, no, I'm not going to turn around and trash La Cage in similar fashion. Honestly, the revival category is pretty weak this year... La Cage most certainly DIDN'T receive raves when it opened. Neither did Charity.
For that matter, even the new ones. Spamalot didn't. Neither did DRS. In fact, I can't think of one single show this season that got across-the-board positive reviews. And I think that shows in the oft-strange spread of the Drama Desk awards... the voters are quite divided this season. Makes it more interesting, actually, to tell the truth.

I think I may be alone on this board.... but i really did not like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and firmly feel that this show should not be taking home Best Musical Prizes.
IMO, the book is extremely weak and depends way too much on current event references and breaking the fourth wall (for me, its a problem when a show breaks fourth wall more times than SPAMALOT).
The Score has about three good songs entangeld with a bunch of clunkers. Yazbek can do and has done much better than this.
I will agree that La Cage should have taken costumes... BUT in no way, shape, or form is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels what I would call a "superior musical"
Spelling Bee got more raves than Spamalot.
Therefore, why didn't it win Outstanding Musical?
The awards leading up to Musical seemed like the Drama Desk was leaning towards either Spelling Bee or Piazza, both are worthy winners in my opinion.
So the win for Spamalot kind of came out of nowhere for me.
Eh, I don't know, we'll see come Tony time.

That thing they did from Alter Boyz makes me happy I am not forced to see that show.
I will be posting a review of Spamalot tomorrow - saw it today.....
It seems like what's happening is that Spamalot does not seem to have anything in particular amazing about it; I mean, I think we all know that the score is not particularly exciting.
BUT...Spamalot has STAR POWER and is sort of generally enjoyable I suppose (I mean, I liked the show). There's nothing outwardly bad about it, and it's very popular.
On the other hand, most people don't like the scores for both DRS and Spelling Bee (many people think the score for Spelling Bee is completely unnecessary) and Piazza, while I think an amazing show, has a sort of limited appeal.
*sigh*
Norbert's win is the only DRS win??? I love that Norbert won but DRS is a damn good show! Nothing for David Yazbek? OY!
I love love love Denis O'Hare and am so thrilled that he won but this means that Christian Borle will get no recognition for his performance.
And I like Spamalot but to give it so many awards just because is so wrong. Spread the love, people!
And I like Spamalot but to give it so many awards just because is so wrong.
They didn't give it awards "just because". Dear me.
And I didn't know that 3 awards qualified as "so many"... I would say this is one of the more even spread of awards I've seen in quite a while. There were a LOT of shows this season.

Sorry, guys. I was just hoping that DRS would win more than best actor. Last year, Hugh's win was the only win for TBfO. No, I think that Isabel Keating won too. So, TBfO won more than DRS, even if it was for acting. Oy! Next time I'll just say "yay Norbert" and shut my trap!

Careful, your agenda is showing.
Let your agenda show - WHO CARES! I dont think the Spamalot Costume Award is justified, nor the Lyric & Show award either. It didn't deserve them. It's my opinion, and I'm allowed to have it...I know there are different strokes for different folks...but Direction & Ramierez are the only 2 superior things about SPAM and the DD couldnt even get those right!
I actually think the Lyrics Award is totally justified for Spamalot. You Won't Succeed On Broadway alone justifies the win. Certainly a lot cleverer than "the best of times is now is now is now" if you ask me. But then, different strokes for different folks.

Certainly, you have a right to your opinion, but MY opinion is you thinly veiled your Spamalot bashing with a thread about drama desk discussion. If you want to bash Spamalot, don't pretend you want to discuss the Drama Desk.

I think the DD awards were pretty well spread out, I really don't think you could classify three wins for Spamalot as "so many."
As for my main disagreements, I wish Altar Boyz would have won for choreography (because Jerry will likely get the Tony), Sweet Charity for revival, and either Christian Borle or Tyler Maynard over Denis O'Hare as featured actor.

The DRAMA DESK has Spamalot BEST MUSICAL!...why some of you cant see how WONDERFUL Spamalot truly is and just enjoy it for the spectical and telling piece of theatre it is...is beyond me...it does what it sets out to do (and there is NOTHING wrong with pure joy and entertainment) & I say BRAVO!

Funny thing is, I am not a Spamalot fanatic...haven't seen it and really have no interest, but I'm not creating threads bashing it....
Congrats to Forbidden Broadway.
I wanted to do a happy dance last night.
Well, I listened to the DRS CD and was completely underwhelmed. Everyone talks about Great Big Stuff and I found it to be a somewhat duller version of Big Black Man. Maybe I have to see it to appreciate it, but as far as the score, Yazbek did it better with Full Monty. MUCH better. Nothing is Too Wonderful to Be True is about the only song I really enjoyed from the DRS CD. As far as scores are concerned, I found Spamalot to be memorable from the first time I saw the show (not counting the two previously written numbers). I can still hum the tune to Burn Her, which was (understandably) cut in previews. And yes, I thought the Spamalot lyrics were a bit more clever and solid than DRS.
