It's ironic that you say that, roquat, because Curtis is fighting for this in an era when it wasn't "cool" at least with the majority audiences. He wants to make it cool and desirable for everyone, but realizes in order to succeed, he has to move the more "soulful" sounding singer (Effie) to singing backup, while the simpler, smoother ("crossover/whiter") sounds of Deena Jones are given the spotlight.
Things would likely be reversed if this were happening today.
BOTTOM LINE: I definitely agree that this film has the potential to work for audiences on SO many different levels.
