Dreamgirls Movie
Dreamgirls Movie#0

Hey everyone, no there isnt any talk of a Dreamgirls movie in the works (sorry to excite), but I was listening to the EFA concert version in the car and started thinking bout who would play who if they did a film version.
So my challenge: cast the movie, using mainstream stars as well as Broadway talent (taking whether or not he/she can sing into consideration). Here is my cast:
Effie White: Frenchie Davis (I would have said Jennifer Holliday but the girls start out as teenagers)
Deena Jones: Beyonce Knowles
Lorrel Robinson: Fantasia Barrino/ Mya
Curtis Taylor: Denzel Washington/ Taye Diggs (not sure if Denzel could sing the role)
Jimmy Early: Cuba Gooding Jr.
CC White: Usher
Marty: Mekhi Pfeiffer
Michelle Morris: Brandy
re: Dreamgirls Movie#1
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:13amI wouldn't put in Mya. I don't think she has the voice for it. How about Christina Milian. She's sort of Beyonce-esque.
re: Dreamgirls Movie#2
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:14amIf there is a script change and Effie kills Deena, I would say GREAT CASTING.
re: Dreamgirls Movie#3
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:15amand also.......I HATE FANTASIA. She sounds like Macey Gray on crack. AND I LOATHE MACEY GRAY. Thanks you.
re: Dreamgirls Movie#4
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:17ami would love to here fantasia barrino belt out "ant no party"!!! i bet she would belt the crap out that song!!!! :)
re: Dreamgirls Movie#6
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:21amTaye Diggs' voice is pretty, I'll grant him that, but he doesn't have much of a range. Too bad, he's so very handsome.
re: Dreamgirls Movie#7
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:23amOf course she would belt crap out it. That is all that comes out of her mouth when she sings. I HATED when she did "Summertime" on American Idol. It was so Jazzy and loud. The song is a lullaby.......the way she sang it would have made the baby wake up and scream it's head off.
re: Dreamgirls Movie#8
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:24amYou go Spider! Down with Fantasia! (Not that Diana deserved to win AI either, but yah...)
re: Dreamgirls Movie#9
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:25amHallelujah, Amen!!!
re: Dreamgirls Movie#10
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:26amSummertime is a beautiful song. I didn't like Fantasia's version. I really got miffed when Randy Jackson called her performance "a master class in singing." How does he know? The judges on that show are so whack.

re: Dreamgirls Movie#12
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:29am"summertime" is my favorite Gershwin song and she butchered it. What got me really miffed, was that last year when Clay sang and they slaughtered him because they said that his voice sounded too much like theatre (like it was a bad thing) but then Fantasia sang an actual theatre song and butchered it, and she was "the best singer ever to be on the show." Please. Death to American Idol. It is so fixed........but that is another thread. :)
re: Dreamgirls Movie#13
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:32amThis thread is getting quite off-topic... and I love it!

Matt_G: Did I get too ghetto on you? I hope not.
For the record, I loved Clay. I want him to release an album of broadway standards. I doubt that his contract would permit such an act of heresy though.

Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:36amWhen do the discussions ever match the topic of the thread?

Well spider, u suggest someone different then, who fits the criteria...
I chose the ones I did for a reason. Effie has to sound loud and brassy, Deena has to sound polished and pretty, and Lorrell has to sound quirkier, and not as polished. Fantasia's voice can best be described as quirky
re: Dreamgirls Movie#17
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:38amI have no clue, and it is nothing against you. Promise. I just hate Fantasia

bronx - Never. This is BWW.com!
batboy - Get Beyonce off of your list. She is in no way pretty and polished. Nix my suggestion for Christina Milian as well. She's Cuban anyway.

Too true, bronxboundexpress, unfortunately, too true...
And keep Beyonce OUT!

re: Dreamgirls Movie#20
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:40amBeyonce is the perfect Deena....lol the character is based off of Diana Ross, and what better parallels can be drawn than between the Supremes and Destiny's Child. Beyonce is the Diana of that group, plus she's gorgeous, can act and sing.
re: Dreamgirls Movie#21
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:42amI love her, but I don't want her in a musical. I don't have much faith in her acting abilities. Did you see Goldmember?
re: Dreamgirls Movie#22
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:43amI have yet to be stunned by Beyonce's "acting". I would like to see more of her before I pass a real judgement, but from what I've seen I don't think she's a great actress. I will admit that she's gorgeous though, and she's got a good voice. Not a GREAT voice, but tons better than any other popular artist right now. Updated On: 7/21/04 at 02:43 AM
re: Dreamgirls Movie#23
Posted: 7/21/04 at 2:45amIT is one of those things where, someone has a really good voice, but it is majorly overplayed. That is Beyonce. I used to like her in Destiny's Child but now I can't stand her. Everywhere you look, there she is. Kelly Rowland on the other hand......LOVE HER.
