The current theatrical version of DREAMGIRLS arrives on DVD on Tuesday May 1, 2007. It is being released in a single-disc version and 2-disc Special Edition (as well as on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD). Though no info has been released on the contents of the Special Edition version, an audio commentary by director Bill Condon will not be included -- due to scheduling conflicts he was not available to record one.

An Expanded Version DVD is being released for Christmas 2007, which will include expanded versions of several musical numbers and will include the "Effie, Sing My Song" sequence, replacing the current spoken-dialogue version currently in the theatrical version. An audio commentary by Bill Condon is hoped to be included on this version of the DVD.

why would they make a double disk and then an expanded disk. what will be the difference?

The May 1, 2007 2-disc Special Edition version will contain the film on disc 1 and the 2nd disc will be Special Edition material (documentary, deleted scenes, etc.). The single-disc version will just be the film -- with no extras.

Several 'performance' numbers (including "Fake You Way to the Top" and "Steppin' to the Bad Side") were filmed as longer sequences, which Bill Condon chose to shorten for the current initial release of the film.

The Expanded Version DVD will be including those musical sequences in their original full-lengths (as filmed), plus some additional scenes throughout the remainder of the film.

Bill Condon filmed several sequences in both sung-thru and regular dialogue formats. The Christmas 2007 release of the Expanded Version DVD will use the sung-thru versions not used in the current theatrical version.

You know I hate when the studios double dip like this. I will definitely want it in May. But I also must have that more sung-thru version in December.

I noticed that the press clip of "Fake Your Way to the Top" is shorter than the version that I saw in the actual movie. In the movie, after the shot where it jumps from the rehearsal to the performance, Murphy's following verse was much shorter than the clip I saw on Inside the Actor's Studio.

The nude version in Swahili with Venetian masks comes out in March '08.

It has added numbers from Nine and Edwin Drood.

I'm waiting for that one.
