Thank god. Porter's Jimmy was less "Thunder" and more "Pixie Dust."

"Perfect World" has no relevance in the plot of the film-adaption of DREAMGIRLS. Since Rainbow Records is based on Motown Records, why not pay homage to their early 70's discovery The Jackson Five (with Michael Jackson)? Since they basically pay homage to Diana Ross & The Supremes (even copying LP covers verbatim), this was all in fun to have the references come full circle.
"Perfect World" is seen in the film for about a good 10 seconds. The song mostly plays in the background to the Lorrell and Jimmy backstage scene.
It's not connected to the plot at all -- it's just a peformance song/number taking place at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion during the SOUNDS OF TOMORROW: 10th Anniversary Celebration of Rainbow Records.
I find it amusing how people make so much out of this isolated number since it doesn't even appear for more than 10 seconds in the actual film.

That's why it's distracting, and a little annoying. Mischief is right in that it totally pulls you out of the movie. As much as I enjoyed the movie, I did think that a lot of the Supremes "homages" were overkill. Some of the stuff, while a bit jarring wouldn't be noticeable to the casual Supremes fan, such as the album covers of the "Love Child"-esque clip.
Even though "Perfect World" and little

As for the orchestrations-I love them, perfect for the era. "Move" would not have been performed by a 20+ piece Broadway orchestra in real life, neither would "Heavy" or any other number. So though they may sound a little more bare than Broadway, they actually fit the film well.

And I disagree about the Five Tuxedos/Tempations They don't even come close to the iconic look of a young Michael Jackson.

This is WAY too much time being spent on something that lasts about 10 seconds in the damn film!
Woof!

Better yet...SEE the film for yourself before you make you're own assumption: 'that this film is essentially passing itself off as a Supremes biopic'.
That is so far from the truth...and yes, I've seen the film more than once AND quite familiar with the 'real' story of The Supremes/Diana Ross & The Supremes.

Well...I'm sure there'll be quite a bit more who won't 'get' the film and take it as a biopic film of The Supremes.
Oh well, sorry Bill Condon...it's gonna happen.

And you did? Or have I missed the general consensus that it's this generation's Valley of Dolls?
To willfully deny that the Supremes parallels have been more than accentuated suggests that it is you who did not get it.
