JUST LISTENED TO THE DELUXE EDITION FROM START TO FINISH (with no interruptions). Love it.
Hot damn, can Eddie Murphy rock!
And Hudson, yeah, don't get me started.
Fun recording.
Y'all hear the little 50 second hidden track at the end?

Mischeif-unintentional laughter? Obviously, you didn't see that Bill Condon's reference to the Jackson 5 was meant to be a joke. And, how can it pull you out of the story if it appears for a good (as BrodayFosse said) ten seconds? If anything, it helps establish where the next scene takes place. I have a hard time believing you saw the film or knew anything about the material before hand. There are so many references to the Supremes, Jackson 5 and other cultural points in the 60's/70's that it's hard not to know that Bill Condon meant these as somewhat "inside jokes".
Yes, I *saw* the film, wickedfan (I was at the same showing that Kringas was at) and at the screening the audience was laughing at "Perfect World" because Michael Jackson is such a freak. They were not laughing at any in-joke. They were laughing at what a mess his personal life is. Michael Jackson's personal life has nothing to do with Dreamgirls, hence if people were laughing at that, they were pulled out of the story and the film and that is not a good thing. So what if was only on screen for a brief time. It only takes one second to destroy believability and credibility in a play or film and it takes a while to regain it.
I understand what Condon was doing with the J5 reference. All his other choices to create an authentic era of time and place worked for me. This one choice did not.
But despite the fact that I saw the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls, I did NOT know it was about Diana Ross and the Supremes until I read your post, wickedfan. Could you tell me more about that, please. Which character is based on Ross? Is it the role Jennifer Hudson played?
I also recently heard the musical Wicked is actually based on the Wizard of Oz. Could you please confirm this rumor for me, wickedfan? You seem to be so knowledgeable about Dreamgirls - among other things.

You saw the original Broadway production and you didn't know the Supremes connection until NOW? 25 years later?
Dude...that must be one huge boulder you've been living under for these 2 past decades.
OUCH!
Even on the liner notes of the Original Broadway Cast Recording LP it mentions (and disclaims) The Supremes connection.
Wow!

I still can't believe you're questioning WHICH of the roles is based on Diana Ross.
Wow! I don't know if your posts are jokes or if you're dead serious.
Double-wow!

Wow, Mischief, you got me. You TOTALLY got me. I'm in disbelief. I've been shot down. I'm finished. Wow. And, in all fairness the post I was replying to seemed like people were laughing at the film, not Michael Jackson's personal life. Sorry for not understanding you. I can't live with myself anymore.
Oh, and no, Wicked is NOT based off of The Wizard of Oz. It's loosely based off of Michael Bennett's relationship with Jennifer Holliday (Elphaba representing Holliday). The whole "What is This Feeling?" number is based off of a real conversation they had. Didn't you KNOW that? Jeez. I guess I DO know so much about Dreamgirls.

BrodyFosse123 - WOW! I've been reading your posts on the Dreamgirls threads and scratching my head at almost everything you've written.
Now I am dumbfounded you didn't understand my statement about not knowing the Dreamgirls was based on the Supremes was to mock the smug post by wickedfan.
Now your Dreamgirls-is-the-new-camp-classic thread really makes sense to me. Clearly you do not have an understanding of the nature of humor. Stop taking yourself so seriously.

Totally validate your comment about my post.
I actually didn't read your WICKED portion, which explains my 'attack'.
So sorry. That what happens when one 'assumes'.
S'all good. It just thru me on a huge loop the whole Supremes bit.
Woof!

OK, I think my remarks about Beyoncé’s singing voice as a soloist or member of Destiny’s Child were slightly misconstrued. To me, Beyoncé’s performance on the subject soundtrack was spot-on and well within character. It’s on her personal studio projects that she and the current crop of pop/rnb-lite singers just don’t meet my muster. On much of her solo work, I still find Beyoncé’s singing voice shrill, sharp, monotonous and cookie-cutter. To her credit, she really delivered on ‘Dangerously In Love’ and ‘Listen’ which I’m calling a masterpiece to anyone willing to listen. And no one has ever accused Diana Ross of being a vocal powerhouse but the lady has always been a song stylist/interpreter-extraordinaire capable of thoroughly engaging an audience and giving a first-rate interview.
I’d also like to remind this audience that Diana Ross entered the business prior to the advent of the present-day ubiquitous cable video complex which I always use as the line of demarcation in any discussion about recording artists of today versus yesteryear. Heck yeah I tend to defend my era because the legacy acts then had to sell the product the hard way, by radio and a kick-azz road show. Today, some acts, especially the young ladies, simply have to be eye candy, lay some Pro-Tools assisted vocal tracks produced by some egomaniacal blinged-out producer who changes his name every 3 months, pay friends for adds on the web space that dare not be mentioned on here, pay “pitchers” who in turn DJ’s & station programmers for radio spins, lip sync through a video directed by hot-producer-du-jour and BAM. There barrier to entry in show business is substantially lower today than it was for Diana Ross since she’s been put out that as an example. I’m just not quite ready to declare Beyoncé this generation’s Diana Ross in terms of her artistry as a soloist and the dues she’s paid to make her mark in the business. She’s on course though.

That little snippet at the end of Disc 2 of the Deluxe Edition (on the "Patience" - Composer Demo track) comes from a scene towards the end of the film. Even if you're somewhat familiar with the plot, it is simply Effie finally having her last word to Curtis, after all is said and done.
No need to touch on it further
If you're not at all familiar with the plot, I definitely don't want to spoil it for you.
