The teaser-trailer for DREAMGIRLS debuts in theatres December 9th.
With what movie? Narnia?
Silly pop.
Brokeback Mountain, of course!
I'm trying not to think about that movie, seens as it's a 3 week wait for those of us still stranded in the UK.

When do they start shooting?
Not til January.
The teaser will probably be like the one used for "The Da Vinci Code" which didn't use any actual footage beacuse the film hadn't started filming when it hit theatres last year.

I'm hoping it has some Tony clips of Jennifer Holliday in way too much makeup crying and screaming her throat out of her body.
I'm sure it'll at least have clips of either her or Jennifer Hudson singing AIATY. What else could they use? No one knows the title track anymore.

The cast has been in rehearsals for three weeks and I believe they've starting laying down the music tracks (the performers obviously will be lipsynching to backing tracks in the filming). Perhaps, they'll use one or more of the prerecorded songs for the trailer.
As for the Tony clip, one can now understand why Breglio and Geffen have been so protective of everything associated with Dreamgirls for years. They wanted to treat the show as something very special and not just any old Broadway musical. This is why they stopped Broadway Treasures from using either the Dreamgirls or the A Chorus Line Tony clips and why Breglio makes it all but impossible for anyone to view the video of the show at Lincoln Center.
Now with the movie coming out, they've offered to pay the licensing fees for any amateur group out there who wants to do the show, trying to encourage as many productions as possible and create a buzz for the film. I imagine the famous Tony clip is going to pop up at some point as well, perhaps as part of some tv special promoting the film.

There's no hope for any live singing, then?
I was hoping some of the scenes wouldn't have that awful lip-syncing thing going on. It's not like they can't mix with the technology we have available now.
To me, the syncing is the most disgusting part of the movie-musical. It even bothered me fairly often in "Chicago"

Not sure if they're attempting anything live, but I'll find out. Given some scenes take place on stage and in recording studios, I don't see why they couldn't do a few things live.
I've viewed the video of Dreamgirls at Lincoln Center 2 times on different occasions. I simply said i was a cast member of the tour(then)and was given viewing access of the entire show easily. Friends have done the same.

I've heard from other people that they were told that they needed written permission from Breglio in order to view the tape and that when they tried to get that, Breglio turned them down, saying that he only granted permission to those affiliated with a professional production of the show. Perhaps, he's gotten less strict about it over the years, though.
This is true Margot. i did need permission from The Breglio office but was granted it easily after stating that i was a cast member of the national tour which of course was a professional production. no check was made on my claim and i and friends viewed without incedent.
Teaser trailers generally don't have ANY footage or audio in them from the actual final film. They are made well in advance to drum up buzz and attention for a movie. They are usually graphic-based with appropriate but not accurate audio/music. In the case of Dreamgirls, they will likely use one of the recordings that already exists, since Geffen owns the rights to them himself. Not a big issue there.
The cast has been in rehearsals for a little over a week now (not three), but dance rehearsals with the choreographer and assistants have been going on a little longer than that.
No pre-recording has happened yet. It's too early.
I'm sure the Teaser Trailer will be exciting, but don't look for anything from the actual film (obviously).

How do you know rehearsals have started?

Well, it depends on the teaser, really. I can think of two recent examples that included film footage, but they're both unusual situations. Anyway, in this case, as everyone has said, there's no way there's going to be any visual or audio stuff from the actual movie. But I still hope they put it on Apple. :)
Several reasons, actually... which I'd prefer not to go into.
But to play fair and continue posting on these "Dreamgirls" threads, Jennifer Hudson mentioned it in the USA Today article. She started rehearsals last Tuesday.
EDIT: Plum--- You're right, which is why I said they "generally" don't have film footage in them. There are exceptions, but not many. That's why they're called "Teasers." It's literally a tease.

I have friends who are affiliated with the production and they informed me that rehearsals for the cast have been going on for three weeks. Hudson just joined them last week because she was just hired.
Well, Margo, I guess it depends on what you mean by cast rehearsals. Beyonce has been rehearsing for more than that, actually.
I took "cast rehearsals" to mean just that. Not one-on-one sessions, or ensemble sing-throughs... but if that means cast rehearsals to you... then, yes.
Does it really matter? Point is - rehearsals are in full swing, filming begins January, and we get a teaser trailer in two weeks. I. CAN. NOT. WAIT.
Gosh, I hope it has Hudson singing AIATY on it!
CapnHook --- You're right, it really doesn't matter. To be honest, some of them have been in rehearsal now for close to 6 weeks. It takes a LOT to put this together.
I'm going to have to be careful about what I say on these threads now, because when I started posting thoughts on "Dreamgirls," I was an excited fan like the rest of you. But the company I work for is now directly involved with this film. So, I guess I need to "chill" with what I know. It's tough, because I want to talk about it just like the rest of you. And to some extent, I'm sure I will participate. I just have to be very careful, that's all.

best2bars, well speak in codes (hahehehe)...
Yes, Beyonce' been in rehearsal for about 3 weeks (she flew out to LA on the 4th of this month for production).

ellenoshalom---Codes, yes. But mostly "foot in my mouth" lately. My posts on this subject have been coming out very clumsy in the past 2 weeks, because I found myself giving awkward half-answers that raise my own eyebrows, let alone others. I just can't "go there" and fully explain sometimes.
But I will say that it's getting VERY exciting already. Even in the early stages. That much won't land me in jail.
EDIT: GREAT shot of Beyonce, by the way. Good God.
