For the audience, would there be must difference between a Broadway show's dress rehearsal (with audience invited) and the next night's first show of the previews phase? Would anyone see a discernible difference if it is a rehearsal?

At a rehearsal, they can stop and redo things. Even if there's an audience, it is still a rehearsal.

apparently they stopped at least once on Wednesday's dress rehearsal (is it also called a gypsy runthrough?) of The Pajama Game. I spoke to Jen Cody Saturday night and she said that Thursday was the first time they ever did the show the whole way through.

Oh and Beacon, I know that you posted this because you know that tonight is the dress rehearsal of Barefoot in the Park!

I sooooooooooo wish I could be there tonight. To see Mister Wilson in "rehearsal" mode.

*sigh*

And you'll post afterwards, right?

Are you going to do the Stage Door?

Well if they do, could you kidnap Mr. Wilson and FedEx him to Beacon?

I believe a "Gypsy Run through" is what is done usually before a show goes out of town. It's done with rehearsal clothes and a piano. A dress rehearsal is as if it were a real performance. Costumes, sets, lights and full orchestra.

I like jacobtsf's idea...
bring a large Fed-Ex box with you to the matinee.

And, don't forget the air holes and a few treats to last him as he is shipped upstate! :o)

During a dress rehearsal and during previews the show is 'allowed' to be stopped for any (major) reason. After opening of course this is 'not allowed' but we all know it has happened. As well during previews any aspect of the show can be changed (ie. cutting songs, wardrobe changes, lighting, etc...)

To answer the original question though, you wouldn't see much of a difference between final dress and 1st preview. Most cuts/changes would happen later on during previews.
