In terms of Uggs, I would consider the season and weather- as well as the shoe's look. I have a tan pair that look quite nice when I fold the top over. In general, I go with nice and comfortable- dark new balance or Cole Haan shoes with the Nike soles. I do tend to get TKTs tix and I walk around quite a bit, sometimes before and or after the show. Black jeans or slacks. I would avoid tank tops, sweats, crocs, visible t-shirts(I went crazy with layers this winter), bright blue jeans and shorts. Shirtwise, the weather is a factor but I go on the nice casual side- blouses, button downs, polos.
But Weez can I go in green face to see WICKED?
I can't imagine what a person wears has anything to do with going to the theater Well, not anymore than what it says about you as a person in general.
As many have said, I'm often out for the day while in the city so I'm going for comfort and practicality.
As long as someone else's attire doesn't cause a distraction to my enjoyment of the show, I don't pass judgement.
Again to show the change in times but more recently: I bring my HS students to NY for a theater weekend every year. As recently as 10 years ago, it use to be that during the rest stop for dinner there would be quite a transformation: the girls would go into the bathrooms in their jeans and come out dressed to the nines for the evening show. Of course, they still had to endure another few hours on a bus before arriving to the theatre. Now? No change, whatsoever.

The only time I've felt underdressed was at South Pacific. I was in a tee shirt and jeans (I had been running around the city all day), and most people were in dresses, suits, and ::gasp:: fur coats.
My theatre-going is normally a spur-of-the-moment decision, so I don't have time to change. When I go straight from work, I obviously look nicer.
Working front-of-house at a theatre, you do see everything. People do wear sweats and torn shirts, and people wear dresses.

PEOPLE wear dresses, or just women?

People. I've seen men in dresses.
It's 2011. There's nothing wrong with wearing nice jeans to the theater. I almost always wear jeans.
I don't usually wear jeans to the theatre. I have in the past year to local theater and I wore them last night to N2N in Denver and several people noticed and commented.
I've been thinking this over a little more, and I think the bigger issue is not how people look going to the theatre, but how people look going outside of their house. Like many of you said, you go to the theatre at the last minute, after being out in the city all day. I'm guessing that most of you took some effort in getting dressed in the first place. The issue I have is that a lot of people just look sloppy and careless anyway, and continue to look sloppy and careless when they go to the theatre. You don't need to wear a gown or a tux, but take some pride in your appearance and clean up a little.
...and I'm sure this makes me sound like a mega bitch.
No, I get what you're saying. I hardly ever "dress up" to go to the theater per se, but I do try to look neat and presentable at the very least. I almost always wear jeans to the theatre, but I would never wear sweatpants or gym shorts or anything in that vein. I personally don't care what the people around me are wearing as long as they don't smell.
