Posted: 7/21/06 at 12:51pmOnce again, I'm sorry to thread jack, even though no one answered my first question. Why is it that someone can't have an opinion? If someone thinks Drowsey is mediocre thats fine! Respect their opinion.

OY -- I'm going to stick to the original intent of this post, and that is the fact the murphy bed broke.
Although this could be a bad break for any show, I would have loved to be in that audience. Bob Martin's ad-lib is hilarious. I saw the show in the original previews in L.A and have seen it on Broadway and my stomach hurt from laughing after both shows. I wish I could have seen how the cast handled it this time.
I loved Drowsy, not just because I'm a Sutton Foster fan, but because it was a nice escape from my everyday, dreary life. Very fun, and happy -- just like a 1920s musical.
WORDS TO LIVE BY:
As we stumble along on life's funny journey. As we stumble along into the blue. We look here and we look there, seeking answers anywhere. Never sure of where to turn or what to do.
Still we bumble our way through life's crazy labyrinth. Barely knowing left from right nor right from wrong. And the best that we can do is hope a blue bird, will sing his song as we stumble along.

Couldn't agree more.
After I saw them at Bryant Park in which the cast was amazing, I bought tickets and loved it.
Would recommend it to everyone.

a detailed account from a close friend of mine who saw it taht day, she left this on facebook, including silly audience encounters:
"Right after Adolpho's song, the bed broke... we heard this horrible crack and machinery breaking sound and the bed was just stuck and didn't go up. There was a pause - we didn't know what to make of it - then Adolpho just goes, "Let's get the hell out of here!" and he and Beth Leavel walked off totally like it was planned. Then Bob Martin goes, "It's a rent-control apartment. What can I say. You get what you pay for." Then he tried doing his monologue, which was awkward, since it was like, 'That's what I love about broadway - romantic moments like this' and we were all laughing, he was pretty composed though, and meanwhile hands of the crew have appeared, attempting to pull the bed off. So he goes, 'Oh, look, the neighbors!' and waved. The crew looked totally embarrassed and one of them came out and whispered something to him, and he goes, 'We'll be right back after this short break.
Then the curtain fell. Because of the show's format (the opening, no overature, etc) a lot of people thought it was on purpose and that it was intermission and tried to leave the theatre! The guy next to me's wife gets up and leaves and they were going, 'oh, how clever, they set us up!' and I said to him, 'I don't think this is the intermission' and he goes, all wry and knowingly, 'They set us up from the beginning!' and looked really amused. It was quite a night.

RAGTIME won Best Book and Best Score, yet lost Best Musical to THE LION KING... not way too long after the show closed. (DROWSY won Best Book and best score...)
(In my opinion, the show was wonderful, but even if it HAD won Best Musical, it still may not have lasted as long.)
I think that's what RAGTIME story that people were reffering to... someone please correct me if I'm wrong

The Tony winning/losing part is correct, however, it was more the Garth Drabinsky/Livent scandal that forced "Ragtime" to close. Do a Google search on Garth for details.
And it's not that people can't have an opinion on a shows' merits one way or the other, it's just the originator of this thread led with a snarky topic headline, hooked people in with possibly less than sincere concern and then finished with the 'mediocre' comment. All this and they just joined 6/25/06. Kinda suspicious, as in axe to grind?
Regardless...gotta love live theater!

Posted: 7/23/06 at 8:49amThe "Ragtime" situation? Yeah, I believe that would be in reference to the financial mess that dragged the show under and has Messr. Drabinsky hiding from New York justice in Toronto somewhere. 20 some-odd charges of fraud... whew. I remember being incensed at the time because "Ragtime" SHOULD have run for years- maybe not a long-running smash, but it had a lot of time left in it!

Posted: 7/23/06 at 9:31amI agree with FosseBoi. People have a right to their own opinion. I personally think that Drowsy Chaperone is a show that toots its own horn waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much. And I'm just not that big a Sutton Foster fan. I never saw Thoroughly Modern Millie or Little Women (and I know people who love that show as much as Wicked). This looks like a good show but I won't pay full price to see it. Maybe half price.

Posted: 7/23/06 at 11:04amI definitely am not impressed with the show. I think people are clinging to it because, out of the crap that's come out lately, they are desperate for one good musical.
#44re: Drowsy stopped
Posted: 7/23/06 at 11:09amI thought the Ragtime mess was referring to the technical aspects of the show that may have gone wrong so I am still waiting for a story on that.

Saw Drowsy on TDF
It was fluff nothing more. Jersey Boys was far superior. Drowsy was enjoyable but not the great musical others are saying it is - IMO. Glad we saw it but equally glad not full price
We gave it an 8.5 out of 10
Re Ragtime, the show was expensive to run with a huge cast. It should have run longer & should have won the Tony for Best Musical. Drabinsky's troubles obviously impacted on the shows early closing. What a pity

Posted: 7/23/06 at 11:55amMr. Drabinsky's troubles? Would that were just the case. Trouble has followed Mr. Drabinsky ofr a long time now. Do a goole search on Cineplex Odeon and Mr. Drabinsky's attempts to organize a hostile takeover of Univeral, or the 1980's Toronto Theatre Festival and you'll see more about Mr. Drabinsky's troubles.
