I heard this report last night on Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight, I believe. An original musical by Elton John about Freddy Mercury and Queen, as opposed to a show using vintage Queen songs. Eric McCormack of Will & Grace starring.
Did I hear correctly? Does anyone know what stage of development this may be in?
Thanks:)

I love Eric! That'd be awesome!
I pity any performer who's job is to try and recreate either the charisma or the vocal range of Freddy Mercury. There was only one.

Now that you mention it, i hear its in the works
j/k
Marissa, you are correct. I don't think Elton ever does sleep. I think he takes the same meds as Gene Hackman.
You're comparing Queen to The Spice Girls?
Um, ok.

is there maybe a little confusion over Elton's Anne Rice musical and this one? Does Rice have a novel title with "Queen" in it?

Eric McCormack as Freddy? Never!!! He's much too whitebread. The only Freddy that McCormack could play is Freddy Eynsford-Hill.
Anne Rice has a novel called 'Queen of the Damned.'

Somehow I never pictured Dollypop running out and buying the Queen catalogue. But I do think Eric could do a jammin version of "Fat Bottomed Girls."

Hmmmm...Maybe the confusion is that the London musical, featuring the music of Queen, We Will Rock You, has a (dreadfull) book written by UK comedian/writer Ben 'Elton'. Who knows...
Yeah the last I heard Elton John (actually, isn't he Sir Elton now?) was working on a musical adaptation of "Interview with a Vampire." One of my friends just auditioned for and got called back for the show. Unless it's like loosely based on that story and other Anne Rice fictions. Who knows, but Elton's adaptation of a Queen musical is news to me.
I LOOOOOVE Queen!! Freddy was so charismatic. Eric is too, but maybe in a different way? I'm having trouble picturing it even to he's immensely talented. I guess I'll have to wait and see :)

I have no idea what "Queen " is and even less info about Freddy Mercury. However if TAMrMcC is involved, I'll be there. Loyalty is my strongest quality.
i thought i read somewhere the Elton John/Taupin musical was to be based on several of Rice's novels, not just LESTAT. But the "Elton" connection to WE WILL ROCK YOU with Queen's catalog as a score may well be the source of the confusion. Or Elton John could be writing or contemplating two musicals at once, of course. It just seems odd he would start a bio-musical so closely on the heels of WE WILL ROCK YOU and TABOO (i know a different era and pop singer but similar material in terms of bio musicals).

First of all...I'd have to agree, NO ONE could EVER match up to Freddie Mercury, it just isn't possible.
and how could you not know about Queen??? They are the greatest rock band ever! Freddie could sing every type of music out there. I highly recommend his opera album. Chills down my spine everytime I listen to it :c)

Dollypop, Queen was a rock group from the '70s and '80s. Their lead singer was Freddie Mercury, a very flamboyant performer (think yards of gold lame) with a beautiful tenor voice. Mercury died of AIDS in 1991. Some of Queen's hits were "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Are The Champions", "We Will Rock You", "Another One Bites The Dust", "Bicycle Race"

Thanks Gothampc. I appreciate you're taking the time to clar that up.
Mercury also did a mean version of "Hey, Big Spender".
Honestly...we don't need any more Mamma Mia type crap on broadway.
I actually think Freddie's life would make a great musical if done right, and I think Elton could pull it off. Queen's music is timeless and so is Freddie!

Queens? Queens?
This reminds me of a story (totally OT)
I was talking with my sister once and she and I were laughing. She said "Jon you are such a queen!"
My mom who is very Jackie Onassis/Audrey Hepburn like looks up from her book and says "No Darling, jON, is only a princess...I am not dead yet."
I've been listening to Queen since I was like 8 years old, and it wasn't until like 3 months ago that I found out that "Queen" was a play on words for obvious reasons. You know how when you're a kid you don't know what "queen" means and I just hadn't thought about it anymore...I just figured it was making fun of the Queen of England. I must thank VH1 for enlightening me LOL!
